Any spoilers behind cut or links. Every and likely all cuts/links may contain spoilers!

Holy cow, the new areas are nice. Amazing detail. Not as pretty as CoP areas, but nice in their own ways.

I wish I had taken notes of all the new/cool things I encountered as I went along, but I was too excited and kept getting distracted by stuff. :P

Highly cool: We were on the second boat into the new area! I thought we were first, but apparently there was one boat ahead of us. :( Luckily that first boat was nearly empty, so we were still some of the first players to ever enter the new zones.

Waiting for the new content to become active was a serious bitch. God damned idiot players couldn't stop spamming, /randoming (which cannot be filtered out), and making drinking/farting/raping/high school jokes. I would have willingly shot each of them in the head (okay, not really). But the bad part was over fast and the new stuff was so wonderful it totally outshined it!

* The boat ride over (which was rather too long for my tastes). Whales! Singing whales! And seagulls! So cool!

* You could jump off some of the bridges! I've always missed that (WoW had it)! It's so cool that they added it in, fially!

* Pets out in the city! So cool! Carbies and wyverns everywhere! (Hmm, I wonder if fellowship NPCs can be called out?)

Everything was so totally new and different! The whole city, the NPCs, everything had such a different flavor! So cool!

And lastly, I loved how I treated the whole area differently: Usually I ignore NPCs, but I wanted to talk to each and every one in the new areas. :D

A warning: The mobs outside of town are serious. They're EP and up to a 75, and high end EP at that (got 18 XP for killing one in a party). Not only that, they're strong and fast. I saw a tiger chase down and kill a 75 NIN or THF. I swear, the tiger looked like it had Flee on. I've never seen any mob move that fast.

I took a few hundred screenshots. :P I picked out the best ones to upload, but that's 72 of them. They are not edited! They're full sized! Sorry, but there are too many of them and it's too late for me to edit them. Also sorry that that FPS is stuck in the corner; I hate seeing it there, but I'm using an old version of the Windower and I can't get rid of it (I tried all of the F-keys...).

Whole directory, feel free to look at as many or as few as you like: http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/ (Again: Spoiler warnings!)

Some of the ones I especially like:

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2020-21-15-26.jpg - love the text! That was a fun CS and I can't wait to do that quest.

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2020-40-00-50.jpg - view of the city from outside. For some odd reason, it was overcast the whole time we were there, which didn't make for pretty screenshots. Since we were there all night (RL), I wonder if it's just always overcast?

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2020-49-15-31.jpg - Mammoths! Screenshot taken from far away because they were VT+ to 75. o.O

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2020-53-14-42.jpg - Those odd spiders (for Eadwyn!) Man, they hit fast, too.

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2020-55-21-31.jpg - Nice picture of outside.

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2020-56-55-18.jpg - Cutest Mobs Ever!

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2020-58-13-53.jpg - Tiger down there. Everywhere we went, the mobs were pretty darned thick. I bet some of these places will be good XP spots.

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2021-04-24-45.jpg - Just look at the city details! So cool!

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2021-11-00-46.jpg - Talk about armor that'll clink when you walk...

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2021-11-54-17.jpg - This is where I was able to jump down from! I was right next to that NPC.

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2021-13-12-07.jpg - Interesting looking weapon, but doesn't look very practical...

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2021-18-18-62.jpg - Coolest New NPC Trick Ever. Read the bottom half of the text. (If you have the expansion pack, you might want to skip this one. It's fun to discover it on your own! Only screenshot with only text.)

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2021-23-44-45.jpg - Black coffee for Black Mages? :P

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2021-25-22-17.jpg - I noticed more of the NPCs were saying things related to sex. A little odd, but hey! You can use me all you like, baby~

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2021-29-10-48.jpg - Second cutest mob (mob?) ever. Oh my god, I want one! Eee!

http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/ffxi/treasures/pol%202006-04-19%2021-48-41-12.jpg - There are so many links I wanted to use and say "Like a postcard!" but I couldn't pick just one, so I picked one at random. Look at this shot! Like a postcard!

Man, so much to see! I'm highly tempted to call in sick to work tomorrow, but I can't/shouldn't/won't. It'll all still be there when I get back. :)

Again, sorry the screenshots aren't smaller. I know they're easier to see when resized, but I have no time. So sleepy. zzzzz

Oh, Ead: There's a black pepper vendor there with what appears to be an unlimited amount of it. We can bring some in for you if you still need it.

So, the boy was right and you WERE too busy playing to bother answering my questions! Not that I'm surprised... but still! Hrmph!

I'm sorry to say (okay fine, not really -- I'm such a bad person) that we've caved. With graduation and all the boy's got old textbooks to sell, which means a tiny amount of money, which means I can ignore the naysayers and be horrible and blow it right away. ^^()

Question time!

What're the most commong races/classes in game? If we're going to be pathetic lowbies, is there a point to get the expansion right away? Is there a trial thingie for a friend to use (because I'm far more into MMOs than he is, and he'd like to give it a shot first)? How does HP/mana work, do you regen automatically like in WoW, or do you have to stop and heal yourself, or have someone heal you like in DDO?

Umm... that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Oh! Aside from, what did you start out as? Just curious. And that really is it, now!

Oops, sorry! I was a tad busy last night, yep. :D Here's some quick info, I'll give you more once I get to work:

What're the most commong races/classes in game?

Classes (jobs) doesn't matter. Yuo can start out a warrior and decide you hate it so switch to a red mage. Every character can level any and all jobs -- in fact, you'll need to level at least two! (One to use as your subjob).

If we're going to be pathetic lowbies, is there a point to get the expansion right away? Is there a trial thingie for a friend to use (because I'm far more into MMOs than he is, and he'd like to give it a shot first)?

I believe that they're all packaged together now -- you can't buy just the basic game alone. Once you buy a "content ID" (character) you can buy additional ones for only a dollar. However, if you two play that way, you cannot be on at the same time. The game might be packaged with one of those 'Your friend plays free for 30 days!' things, mine was years ago.

How does HP/mana work, do you regen automatically like in WoW, or do you have to stop and heal yourself, or have someone heal you like in DDO?

Depends on your job. Some jobs heal HP on their own, some jobs heal MP (mana) on their own, most jobs do neither and you either need to sit and rest or have someone heal you.

Off to work now!

Oops, missed one:

> Umm... that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Oh! Aside from, what did you start out as? Just curious. And that really is it, now!

I started out as a white mage, and ended up as a 75 (highest you can go) dark knight -- about as opposite as white mage as you can get! I'm also currently leveling ninja and red mage, two highly handy jobs.

Oops, I forgot to answer about races! That's an important thing to decide on. If you know what job you want to level (and believe me, you don't. Everyone thinks 'I want to be an X! For sure!' and everyone ends up leveling something else), then you can decide based on that.

There are two types of races: specialists and general ones.

Specialists:
Taru: They're tiny little folks. Magic users. Lots of mana, but very little HP.
Galka: Big honking (ugly, in my opinion) male-only characters. Tons of HP (built like a brick wall!) but little MP.

Sort of general:
Elf: Odd looking (very tall, very long necks), tending towards strength and HP. Lacking in things like accuracy and somewhat in MP.
Mithra: Catgirls, female only. Tending towards acc/dex, somewhat lacking in strength/MP.

Very very general:
Hume: (Humans of the world.) Good at everything but not especially good at anything, but also not lacking in anything. "Jack of all trades but master of none." It's what I play.

Related to race is the city you'll start in. If you pick the "right" city for your race, you'll get a "(City name) Ring" to start out with. It has good stats for low level people, but you can certainly get by without it (I never had one).

Bastok: Industrial (ugly, in my opinion). Home of humes and galka. The galka are totally second class citizens, very oppressed and thus some are uppidity.

San d'Oria: (AKA Sandy) Home of elves, and where I started. Start anywhere you like though, I can get anywhere you are. :)

Windurst: (AKA: Windy) Home of taru and mithra.

Oh, one more thing on race: If you play a taru and later decide you want to be a tank/damage dealer (DD), your limitations can somewhat be gotten around by armor. Different armors have different stats, so if you throw enough money at things your galka can be an okay magic user or your little taru can tank. Not as good as someone of the "right" race, but people won't laugh in your face and not invite you to party.

Oh jobs, there's no limit at all -- sort of.

When you start the game, you can level any and all of the "basic jobs". There's... eight of them, I want to say. Thief (THF), warrior (WAR), white mage (WHM), black mage (BLM), red mage (RDM), and monk (MNK). Oops, that's only six, so not eight.

At certain levels, you do quests to get certain things. One of the most important is when you hit level 18 -- you'll need to do the subjob quest. (No worries, it's easy when people help you.) Once completed, you'll not just be a warrior or a white mage, you'll be a WAR/MNK or a WHM/BLM -- you'll have a job and a subjob. You'll need to keep your subjob leveled (it's half your main job, so if you're a WHM 40 you'll want your BLM to be no less than level 20), but it gives great stats/abilities boost to your main job.

Once you hit level 30, you can start doing quests for the "advanced jobs". Each job has a quest, some very easy and some harder (and some impossible without help). Things like DRK (dark knight), NIN (ninja), and BRD (bard) are advanced jobs. Once you open them all, you'll be able to play 15 jobs!

But as of last night, there are three more: Blue Mage/BLU (copies mobs' moves), Corsair/COR (pirate), and Puppetmaster/PUP (has a puppet/pet to help fight). So that's 18 jobs you could take to level 75! Is it any wonder people can play this game for years and years? :) Even people who play fulltime (no job/school) don't run out of things to do.

*bounces around*

I'm such a bad person! I'm such a bad, bad, bad person! But we're going to go get the game after lunch. ^^()

Being ancient as it is, it'll probably take forever to install and crap, buuuuuuuuut... Anything important we should know? Like servers/realms/worlds/whatever you call them? Where do you play? That kinda stuff!

Date: 2006-04-20 03:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com
Yay! Unfortunately you'll have about 12 hours of downloading stuff, alas. :P There will be tons of patches and such.

I'll get you a worldpass tonight after work. When you make the character, just input the worldpass number and that will put you on my server (Midgardsormr). If you're ready before I get home, you could try creating your character and going onto a random server and keep trying till you get Midgar, but I'm not sure if Midgar has started accepting random people again (it's a popular server) , so you might not get it that way.

What's your best email address? I'll send you the worldpass number. (It has limited uses, I don't want to just post it.)

*spams you* Aren't you sorry you asked now? ;)

While it's against the rules, you'll probably want to use something called a Windower. Without it FFXI demands fullscreen and if you try to alt-tab or otherwise switch to another window it will crash and log you out. With a Windower, you can alt-tab to look things up and such. There's so much to know and to do, this really really helps. Just do not say you use one on game! All text is logged, so GMs could easily see if you do. All text, even things like /tell ("page" in a MUSH, supposedly private).

In addition to leveling your character, there are tons (tons and tons and tons) of quests you can and should do. There are also missions (which are like quests, but harder and give you rank in your nation, as well as granting things like the ability to ride the airship).

Quests get you fame in the country you do them in (which lowers prices and opens other quests for you, as well as often giving some reward). Some are very important, like one which gives you a license to ride chocobos (much easier/faster/safer to travel on than foot).

Let me know if you have more questions! There's tons to know (and a lot I still don't know, even after playing for two years!). Luckily there are lots of guides and sites out there, so you can do a lot of reading about stuff, too. :)

Date: 2006-04-20 06:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fealu-bryne.livejournal.com
Blechy, I hate running things fullscreen. This Windower thing of which you speak, where do you find them? Just Google 'Windower' or something? Since I've got nothing better to do, I might as well get all the setupping done now.

No, I'm not sorry I asked! I'm excited. I rarely get hyperactive excited about games, but this sort of thing I do. And then I obsess over it for the rest of my life. Which is good right now, because I'm going to have a least a freaking month of complete and total downtime thanks to my surgery, so I need something to do!

Hmm. I'm still stuck on name/race though. I'm afraid I'll come up with a gazillion names and they'll all be taken! And a big part of me wants to play Mithra, but I dunno if Hume would be better... but Mithra is cool... and... *whimpers!*

...Hehe. I love having things to obsess over. ;)

You'll need to go into the windower.ini file and change the screen resolution if you're running higher than 800x600, and I took off the console ` button so I could use my squigglies. ~~~ :3 (Cut from my journal)

Thistle got me my world pass, everything's installed, now all I have to do is the go through the painful process of getting updates and installing.

The boy and I're in a race, apparently. "Yours'll be done before mine, cuz your computer's already on!" "Mine installed faster!" "Mine's still checking!" "Ha ha! I got a world pass and you didn't!" "Mine's still going to be updated before yours!" "Yeah, but you won't be able to do anything!"

My darned work machine is crashing so often, I don't think my long reply to you made it through. Bah.

With mithra, you'll just have to be prepared to be hit on a lot. People are stupid. Even if you tell them you're a man RL, they'll still hit on you. On the other hand, you might be given free stuff... (You know the drill with this, I'm sure.)

Names are a tough one, yeah. I was so happy to get Thistle! Then a year later someone used the name Thistel, ha ha on them! The random name generator isn't so bad, if you can't find anything you like.

See you online!

There's one thing I wanted to add. Sorry for jumping in like this. :)

As much as I love FFXI, it's not the game for everyone, and it has some large faults. WoW tends to have more people because of the simple fact that FFXI makes the game a job in some respects. That isn't necessarily a good thing. You can play two or three hours in WoW and feel you accomplished something, whether it be leveling or crafting, or what not. In FFXI you can spend sixteen hours working your butt off and still not get anything done. Everything in FFXI is a huge time sink. They make you jump through a lot of hoops for very little reward.

This said, I really do love the game. It's why I'm still playing after nearly three years. :) It's just that the learning curve in FFXI is extremely cut throat, and WoW holds you by the hand and walks you through everything. People should be warned ahead of time so they know what they are getting into.

If you and another want to play at the same time you will need to buy two copies. The game's security is actually decent and you can't use the same reg codes on different pcs. :( So unless you don't mind time sharing, you will need two copies of the game, and two pcs (Or PC and PS2), to play at the same time.

At least if you come to Midgardsormr, our server, there won't be a shortage of people who can help. I will be glad to. :)

Yeah, I wasn't sure how much of this I should have gone into -- I don't want to discourage you, Chia, and I don't think I would, but what Draque says is true. I know nothing of DDO, but FFXI is about as different from WoW as PokeMUSH was from a MUD -- if not more different. I know you have a lot of time so you'll actually be lucky. :) People with fulltime jobs (*cry* like me) have a much rougher time of things.

WoW treats you like a beloved and much-spoiled child, while FFXI treats you like a smart adult who wants to be utterly independant. You won't find quest information online, other than what the NPCs tell you (the quest log is nothing, nothing like WoW's). Everything's a challenge. You need to work to gain anything. But as I've said in comments on other days, to me the reward is much sweeter when you've worked for something.

And like Draque said, there will be plenty of us to help you. :) I learned the game pretty much alone, but no one has to do that anymore! You (and Frank, if he comes along) will have friends waiting to help. :)

You and Frank haven't meet Draque, Aurian, and Eadwyn yet, but I'm certain you'll all hit it off. :) You guys are a lot alike! All smart, funny, kind, former (or current) MUSHers, etc. :)

*laughs* Oh, did I forget to mention?

The community is the other part of the reason I wanted to try this. I ditched WoW because there was no sense of community in it for me. DDO... since it's all based on grouping, we made some really wonderful friends. It's fun working together and I love that part. So... I think this'll work for me. ^^

In FFXI, your LS (linkshell, like guild) is your family (or it should be!). You'll get in many many random (or static) parties, but your LS is your home/family/best friends.

Unlike WoW, you can have more than one LS. I'm in two, and they mostly crossover each other. I think I can talk Draque into letting you have a pearl for Youarehere ;) but I'll have to ask other people about getting you into FI. If I can't get you into FI, YAH is a great group just much much smaller.

I'm going to go home for lunch and see if I have enough time to get your worldpass then. Will Frank be playing for sure? If so, I'll get one for him as well. If not (or if he just wants to use a content ID through your game) then I won't get one for him yet.

Yeah, Frank got the game too. We're both horrible. And everything is installed (it didn't take nearly as long as we had thought!) we just need to get updates and stuff, I guess. The servers are down till noon your time, 3pm our time, so we can't do much else right now. But we're all set! And have been jabbering away about it all morning. I feel like such a geek. Hehe. Timesink is EXACTLY what I'm looking for right now. I played WoW, but got bored with it. The last game I was playing was DDO, and it is truely my obsession at the moment -- and from what I heard it's a lot like FFXI, just without the massive amount of content. Wonderful game, great possibilities, but it really needed to be in development a lot longer. Makes me really sad, but...

DDO isn't a "hold your hand" sort of game either, which is why I loved it. Very action-packed fighting system and a lot of difficult quests where you'd fail repeatedly before actually getting through. But I like to play just for the sake of playing, so we'll see... Though I have a pretty good feeling. MMOs are my obsession. Totally. ;)

Then it sounds like FFXI is what you want. :) And yes, I'll happily give pearls even if you can get into FI. I'll also gladly help you learn commands and such.

By the way, a couple commands to get you started:

/tell (name) (message) - for talking to people without others seeing, like "page" in MUSHing.

/l (message) - will send your message over the LS channel.

/p (message) - sends your message over the party channel, if you're in one.

/shout (message) - Sends message to the whole zone. You'll usually not want to do this. :P

If/when you go outside, you can check to see how tough a mob is. Use your tab key to target them then do ctrl-c or alt-c. The different ratings are:

Too Weak (TW or TWW) - you won't get XP by killing them, they won't aggro.

Easy Prey (EP) - You'll get some XP, might aggro. (Anything this level or higher might aggro.)

Even Match (EM) - More XP, it'll be at least as strong as you. Might kill you.

Tough (T), Very Tough (VT), Incredibly Tough (IT) - Levels stronger than you, worth a lot more XP. At very low levels you might successfully kill a T. Don't even try killing a IT. :)

"Impossible to Gauge!" -- only special monsters (NMs) cannot be checked and give that result.

Until you get to know a zone, you'll want to check mobs a lot. Assume everything aggros until you know for sure that they don't. And important: Just because something does or doesn't aggro in one zone does not mean the same applies in another!

If you want to see if I (or someone else) am on, use the /sea (short for search) command:

/sea all Thistle
/search (area) (name)

There are more complex uses for that command, but you don't need to worry about them now.

I get online about 4 PM PST, so you can start looking for me then if you get on before me. Contact me with:

/tell thistle (message)

:)

Oops, I knew I forgot one. DC (Decent Challenge) is between EP and EM.

[livejournal.com profile] thistle_chaser >> Also sorry that that FPS is stuck in the corner; I hate seeing it there, but I'm using an old version of the Windower and I can't get rid of it

While I'm sure the new version of Windower will be up and running very soon, here's what you need to do in 3.2:
  • Go to the directory where you unzipped Windower
  • Open init.txt in the scripts/ subdirectory
  • Add a line that says "showfps 0"

IIRC, there already was a line for enabling the FPS display (showfps 1) about half-way through the script. Or maybe I had just copied it over from my current (broken) version. ^^;

Just wanted to get out of that way before I jealously pounced on your screenshots. ;-)

Ah, thank you! It's very annoying to see it there, and it's even worse that it's marring all the screenshots.

Enjoy them! :)
