If I were to say a day where the only thing I did was stand around in a zone for five hours was a fun, exciting day, would you believe me? But it was!

BRD XP static tonight, but unfortunately Nai lost her connection. We waited an hour and a half for her, but she wasn't able to get back online. But! That was a good thing! (Eh, the waiting part, not her being able to get online.) All these HNM LS people kept running by (we were XPing at the zoneline in Behemoth's Dominion), and the more big kids I saw, the more I wanted to see what they were doing!

So once we gave up, I scurried back and changed to my main job, then ran back out! Even though I was now the same level or higher than all of them, I still felt like a little kid there. :P I kept expecting someone to ask me what I thought I was doing there! Heh.

After a couple hours, King Behemoth spawned! Yay! Everyone on LS warned me to stay back because of his AoE, but apparently if you can see him you're pretty much in range of his AoE. Heehee. So much fun! It took them about 45 minutes to kill him, and I saw the whole thing!

It was a little confusing though, because as far as I could see, they didn't use any melees. o.O I could have missed them because I was trying to stay back, but all I saw were RDMs, SMNs, and tanks. Maybe his AoE is bad enough that LSs wouldn't want to use melees?

This screenshot amused me muchly. I thought it was broken at first: What timing! I've been hit! Heehee.

I took about 40 screenshots, and couldn't pick just one to post here. On one hand, I wish I had gotten closer to get a better shot, but on the other I didn't want to die! This is about as close as I ever got, though now and then he ended up on top of me by accident. (Runs fast for a big thing!) The LS kited him the whole time, nearly till he was 1%. And last, I like this one because it's darker than the others.

I got the time of death for two LSs, because they had to go off and do other things. (Yay for being able to be helpful!) Anoat/Valor, because he had given me so much info about windows and stuff (I would have wandered off long before KB ever spawned if he hadn't explained how it worked). The other was Devilshortee, cause we do things with their LS sometimes and they're nice people. She hadn't asked for the ToD, and seemed happily surprised when I gave it to her. (Yeah, I know people don't usually share that info, but what would /I/ do with it?)

I got hit a lot (enough to get up to 96% TP, even though I rested for MP now and then!), but never died, so it was a great way to end the night.

Is KB a HNM? Or just a NM? If he's HNM, he's the first one I've ever seen in person! Yay! :D So exciting! Only way it would have been better would have been if I could have helped kill it, but still! Yay! Great night! He's such a cool looking mob, like a big angry cat!

I believe KB is the +1 version of Behemoth, which is an HNM in the first place if I'm not mistaken? Not totally sure. I know both like to spam Meteor! At any rate, I think he was a lottery spawn off a 24 hour NM/HNM pop? *not an HNMer either*

Both don't spam Meteor, in fact, Behemoth doesn't do Meteor at all.

That was my understanding as well, but looks like we're wrong!

Anoat told me there were five chances/windows of him popping in a 24 hour period, all in a row. Every 30 minutes there was a minute or two window for him. So about a 2.5 hour long period total, 5 chances within that time, every 30 minutes.

KB is +1 of Behe, correct.

There's 7 windows (3 hours) of 3 minutes for it to pop.

Say one of the two died at 8:00 PM.

The next day, it has a chance of popping at 5:00, 5:30, 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, 7:30, and 8:00. If it hasn't popped yet, it will always pop at the 24 hour mark.

Ahh, I was told 5, not 7! I'm sort of tempted to go watch again, but my time is pretty booked for now. Maybe next week!

Yeah both are HNMs. Behemoth however you can just melee and kill with 3-4 people safely, I main-tanked it as monk with that many. KB uses meteor so everybody kite him. He is actually easier than the KS99 version though, he doesn't meteor as often.
You can always do Limbus and fight those in the apollyon one with the 3 kings copies if you want to see how it feels fighting them. The only bad thing is that in limbus they don't give any items.

So what makes a HNM a HNM instead of just being a NM? I had thought it was the number of people you'd need to kill it.

One day I'll get to Sea and then give it a shot!

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/index.php/Category:Hyper_Notorious_Monsters
Hyper Notorious Monsters are a nebulous category of high-level Notorious Monster. The moniker (also known variably as "High Notorious Monster" or "Heavy Notorious Monster") is largely an informal one used by players, not by developers or the game itself.

in the past, there has been some dispute over what constitutes an HNM. The only traits that most are in agreement over are as follows:
All HNMs are above Level 75, typically requiring an Alliance (or even multiple Alliances!) of players Levels 70 to 75 to defeat.
All HMMs are found on standard maps, and are not BCNM fights.
All HNMs can and will drop valuable and exclusive items and equipment, some specific to a particular HNM, often in multiple types.
All HNMs grant a specific title when defeated.
All Wyrms are HNMs (with the sole exception of Ouryu).

Behemoth *can* be fought by an alliance if pople are not very good.
It also gives a title when you win. It drops valuable and unique items.
This is the same as Fafnir and Nidhogg, both are HNMs. You can also see it in the list

Adamantoise
Aspidochelone
Behemoth
Fafnir
Jormungand
King Behemoth
King Vinegarroon
Nidhogg
Tiamat
Vrtra

Actually SE adopted the term itself as High Notorious Monster, and for the most part people aren't as specific as what they address with the title HNM.
Most people just use HNM for anything with a respawn period of 12+ hours and/or and with a difficulty either highly in excess of it's own level(ie: Simurgh, Roc, King Arthro) or yours(ie: Cerberus, Beastman Gods, Wyrms).
There are different tiers of difficulty but people refer to even things like Old Two-Wings as HNM because it is a 21-24 respawn.

Some of them have pop windows based on last ToD. Behemoth for example, if it died at 6:40PM today would have 30 minute windows from 3:40 to 6:40 pm the next day for 7 windows total. Using Behemoth as an example, from server reset Day 1 of King Behemoth spawn window starts. For the next 7 days Behemoth or KB can pop at any window, as it nears day 7 KB's chance increases until he pops and then there is a 3 day guaranteed NQ cooldown period (all 3 "Ground HNMs" Fafnir/Nidhogg Behemoth/KingB and Adamantoise/Aspidochelone follow this 21-24hr 3-10day HQ spawn pattern). As for KB the specific strategy, kiting, is to avoid meteor. Unlike BLM -ga spells the damage of this non-elemental attack is not reduced by crowding and having it hit multiple targets, and you can see how much dmg it does per person. If you got hit by an AoE on NQ Behe before it was changed it was probably Thunderbolt. NQ grounds AoEs don't hit out of party anymore.
The Beastmen gods hold similar day/window patterns but 2 are lotterys off an NM placeholder during the pop window while the 3rd has no placeholder. King Vinegaroon is another class altogether, popping in the first sand storm weather after 12 hours, and depopping and resetting if not claimed. Kreuzet is not usually called an HNM but pops in this same pattern in wind weather with a slighty shorter repop time. Cemetary Cherry, Lumberjack and KA have a 21-24 hour placeholder and are a 100% pop when that PH is killed.
Other than simple x-y no window respawn times the only other type I can think of is the wyrms and Cerberus which have a giant no window respawn of 3-Unknown days.
Basically when SE was designing their bosses they sat around and thought, "how many different ways can we make a massive time-sink seem exciting?".

Sorry for the long response but it can be interesting to the uninitiated ^^
