There are some FFXI days that boggle even me. Today was one of them. For 14 hours straight (other than a break for one Besieged and chocobo digging) I did nothing but synth. ><

I'd write about how annoying goldsmithing is, but that would come as news to no one.

Goldsmithing 51 -> 52 took me between 750K and 1 million gil. Grrr. (But the plus side: I no longer have those 50 mythril rings to sell! 50 rings I was hoping to sell for 15-20K each, to recoup my money from making them, all gone. Synthed, desynthed, re-synthed, until all gone... and only got .6 skillup from them.)

The skillups were just so bad on those jeweled rings that I switched to gold for a short time (one whole synth!). But seriously, I couldn't take risking 4 20K items each synth, so I went back and used up the last of the rings (and borrowed materials from Beanie).

I kept saying that once I hit GS 52, I'd take a break for a while and make money... but as soon as I finished I set out to make the steel so I could make the claws (and make the animal glue) so I could do the next skillup item (hydro claws).

My big, big problem right now is my lack of mythril. I should have stayed up all Saturday night to make ingots, because of course Sandy is back in last place now and I can't get ore. >< It's not even really nice to ask someone to stand in the airport shop and buy it for me, since each synth takes 4 unstackable objects and I probably need... gah... 5? 6? Lots more? stacks of the finished product. Say I only need 5 stacks of ingots, that would mean someone would need to buy and trade 240 ores to me. Problem is, it's months between Sandy being in first... (Buying from the AH is not an option. Prices are double there -- 100K for a stack of ingots.)

Besieged was good, I recapped DRK XP finally! YAY! Now no more dying~! (Ha ha.)

Digging was bad. One gold beastcoin, and it took 30 stacks of greens. Search didn't seem to show any other diggers in the zone (sometimes it's hard to tell digger vs non), so I don't know what was up.

Can't wait to be done with goldsmithing. Problem is, the itch to level leathercrafting is back, and 90s leathercrafting is way way worse than 50-60 goldsmithing.

Someone please take all my crystals away from me! :)

PS: I hate the word 'mythril'. It always looks like it's not spelled right.

It looks like "mythril" has the word "myth" in it. It's also one letter short of being "my thrill".

Regarding the order of I and Y, it looks like mythril is the opposite of vinyl. Does that help? :)

Heh! I like that.

Eh, no. :P But the 'my thril(l)' does!

Told you about GS, it's easy as cake up until 50-54 or so, then it is just really bad!

If I could get my hands on a lot of mythril, I think the next few levels wouldn't be too too bad.

Steel ingot (I can make, if I can't buy for cheap) + beetle jaw (20-30K/stack) = claws
Animal glue (I now have 9 stacks on hand, waiting to use)
Mythril sheet

Together those make hydro claws, which cap at 59 if I remember my notes correctly. That's not even unreasonably expensive! ...if I can only get my hands on the mythril.

I think it was a bad judgement call on my part (and a partial desire to be rid of all those damned rings and not have to mule overnight for the rest of my life) that made 51-52 so bad. I should have started on the hydro claws then (assuming I had mythril, which I didn't, so maybe the judgement wasn't so bad. :P ).

I did remember specifically warning you against rings hehe
up to 54 it's easy because of gold ingots (no gil loss), I never had much luck with skillups with mythril. Those claws cap at 59 yes and if you get bored you can skip the synth and buy claws from norg vendors. Still a LOT of gil down the drain =P

I was bad last night and bought 15 of the claws from another crafter. I swear, I must have lost my mind because I had the steel and the jaws and the crystals on me at the time. At least it was "only" 10K each (the vendor is slightly more), but today I have no reason at all behind me buying them, other than that crafting from dawn to midnight must have fried my brain.

Ah, I wish I had remembered your warning about the rings! One of the hardest/worst skill items I've ever done.

I think in Tokien's novels, which are likely the source, it's spelled "mithril."

Also, I misread your "goldsmith skillpath" tag as "goddamn skillpath." I suspect that's closer to the truth. ;p

*laughs* Yes, indeed it is closer to the truth.

I gave up goldsmithing when I got to gold. It was too stressful doing synths with 80k of materials.

For mythril ingots, what I did was go to the jewelry shop in Jeuno, buy mythril earrings and desynth them using Lightning crystals. In good conditions I was getting a very decent success rate, even some HQ2/3 results which give 2 ingots.

It boggles the mind how it's possible to even get one ingot from an earring. Laws of conservation anyone? ¬.¬;

Funny thing is, you can actually get two ingots from them! (I did once this weekend.)

Yeah, I did a bit of that, with limited success. I'll probably try it again soon, since I now have a ton of lightning crystals.

I'll see if I can dig up my old notes on favourable conditions.

That'd rock! My guess would be full moon, um, whatever day is weak to lightning (my chart is at home), but if you have better info that'd be great!

Mithril is indeed the Tolkien spelling, and the probable source. :)

D&D spells it Mithral, just to add more confusion to the mix. :) It is all the same stuff though, I think. :)

Yeah, I googled it after posting, and that seemed to be the source.

I could handle "mithril" better than "mythril" -- somehow the Y there in the front makes my brain twitch. "Mithral" looks even more correct though.

Oh. Okay! *buys you dinner first~?*

And by the way, I checked my notes over lunchtime. The G Worms are earthen + no crystal (+ a ton of luck).

And to keep everything in one comment instead of spamming you: I got 6 (6!) gold beastcoins digging over lunchtime today! *boggle* I've never ever gotten that many, 4 was my old record. Maybe they loosened the "empty pockets" thing up, if it had been in place.
