No digging, no TP, lots of nose! (FFXI)
Oct. 24th, 2006 09:40 pmFor the first time since the digging nerf, I didn't go out digging today. It was mostly by choice. Two waves of Besieged were coming, so I decided to do those and then dig after if I had time. But really, there's little reason for me to dig right now. At best I'll dig up gold beastcoins, and I've not been able to sell one in almost two weeks now. Boggle with me: The price on them falls about 1K per two days. I list them, lower them, lower them, lower them... and they never sell. So I make ingots out of them, and wow, the price on those keeps falling and falling. Maybe I should look into making the ingots into chain/thread, but right now I'm just annoyed at the whole thing. Digging hasn't been fun in a long while, so if it's not bringing in money, there's no reason to keep doing it. Money had been my reason for sticking with it this long. (I can't deal with logs or other non-stackables -- no room!)
I've also semi-decided to give up on Besieged, unless I'm bored or need XP on some non-DRK job. I spent 2.5 hours dealing with that tonight (first wave was preparing for more than an hour!), only about 20 minutes of it spent fighting, and for all that time I got a grand total of 800 IS. If only they would turn XP into LP for 75s! I'd totally make an effort to go if they did that.
In sadder news, I've been testing Absorb-TP out the last few days. Never once, not even if my spell lands a few seconds before the mob WSs, have I gotten over 30 TP. Even if the mob WSs 10-15 seconds later, I often get 0 TP from it (not a resisted spell, 0 drained). I get more TP by swinging my weapon instead of spending the time casting. Very, very, very sad. It had been nice to be able to keep up with other melees. Oh well.
There is good news though! My big-nosed bird does not look so ugly when out in the wild! He's actually kind of cute! He's got a lot more "fluffy" feathers around his head than non-digging birds. You can really see the difference when he stands next to a normal bird. I actually kind of like the digging version better!
And lastly, while digging yesterday, I ran into a certain baby HNM in Meri Mountains! I remember when I was a DRK 40 or something around there, I saw him and almost claimed him. LS people warned me off him fast. Heehee.

Date: 2006-10-25 09:56 am (UTC)For gold coins and such, we are all a bit in the same boat i think, i've been using mine instead of selling it, for guild points when I needed etc.
Actually several of the new recipes call for gold, so it might become more scarce soon, for now I just feel better about using it when part of a recipe, and stacks really don't take much space at all in inv. compared to other stuff. There's a few things I will want to make myself HQ+signed (arhat+1 head and body for example), and those use some precious materials like darksteel so I don't mind having a few stacks saved on mules from when I'll attempt signed HQs for myself or for guild points.
The economy in general just seems to be very slow still, not a lot of people buying and selling in general, money and materials don't move hands very much anymore on many things and that's not good...
Sorry to hear about the DRK abs-tp, it sounded like a reasonable tweak to make it dependant on mobs TP, but then it sounds like they nerfed it more down to a very small % of that mob's TP..
I guess SE still has no love for the DRKs, while trying to reward everything "japanese-sounding", like sushi, samurai, ninja... I'm telling you it's a darn conspiracy! >< hehe

Very very much so. I wonder if the issue is at least partially that we need more new players? Old players would tend to need to buy less. (If I want to level WAR, I could use a lot of my DRK level cap stuff.) They would also be more likely to be finished leveling crafting, guild turnins, etc...

I suspect that's what's happening. You get a small percent of the TP they have... if they have any at all. And for some reason, the chance of getting 0 is greatly increased.

But yeah, I suspect people arn't throwing their money around right now, at crafting or other things. While it would make sense to buy things now, while the prices are low*, I feel more comfortable sitting on my cash. Just in case.
*Amusingly, the two things I want to "finish" DRK are actually going up in price. Fast. About 200K every two days for the last many months, roughly.

Date: 2006-10-25 01:55 pm (UTC)I need to go back and poke at Waraxe Beak. Cala issued me a "(I) Can, Can (You)" type challenge with that NM and soloing it. I don't think it'd be difficult, just need to remember to go out there and do it...

Date: 2006-10-25 02:16 pm (UTC)- Stonega IV
- Breakga/that petrifying TP move
We were trying to figure out if WHM/NIN can solo it (magic def. bonus to cut down on the magic damage and barspells and cures and neither of us have RDM leveled..!) but it really depends on how long petrify sticks. You can probably turn around for the TP move, but breakga is going to stick every so often, and I don't think he silences. If you just remember that he aggros and buff up beforehand, you should be fine. (Bring echo drops too.)
He's super easy to duo though if you have someone with stona.

Date: 2006-10-25 04:47 pm (UTC)I can get nearly two swings in in the casting time, and if the very most I get from the spell is 30% (with the average being in the single digits, I'd say)... just totally not worth it.

Date: 2006-10-25 04:56 pm (UTC)It's not so much that I'm worried about my TP gain (see my other comment below) as I'm sad that things are now as they used to be. For a short time we got to see what it was like to be able to nearly keep up with the TP gain of other melees, and then that was taken away. Look at it this way: If a family is dirt poor, and for a week you let them live like upper middleclass families, then at the end you make them poor again, being poor will now seem worse. To give them a taste of something better, then take it away, is not a nice thing.

And yeah. But luckily I don't do all that much on DRK anymore, and when I do use it it's just with friends. They'll still like me, even if I never get TP ever again! :P

Date: 2006-10-25 05:06 pm (UTC)The other depressing thing about digging is that I haven't leveled up once since the nerf. How long was that ago? Like half a year? With me digging every single day (except last night). How will anyone get to be A10 anymore?
It really shouldn't annoy me as much as it does. It doesn't take much time to dig (and a little more time than that to mule/process the stuff), and you can still make a profit doing it... I'm just getting frustrated with it, I guess.

Date: 2006-10-25 06:07 pm (UTC)And yes, you actually do start making a tiny bit of a profit, or at least breaking even, once you hit adolescence. A lot of different care plan options open up then. I've had mine carrying packages almost exclusively since he got the option. It raises his strength and endurance and it nets me 100-200 gil per day (depending on how he did).
If he does get sick/injured, I'd suggest taking care of that rather than waiting. It does affect the effectiveness of the plans, and generally if you ask, several people in the LS will have the stuff handy.
Lovesickness, however, I just wait out. The only known cure for it is a very expensive crafted item. Pining doesn't seem to hurt him too badly. ;p You also won't see that until adulthood.

Date: 2006-10-25 05:46 pm (UTC)I'm not sure how much the initial egg costs (1-2K I think), you can get it from the mithra child near the AH in the highest level of Jeuno. Once the chick hatches, you can raise it perfectly fine on greens bought from the NPC. 2 fills it up just fine, 3 makes it very full. If you get the greens from the vendor standing next to the stable, they cost about 62g each, I think. You can also feed Sandy Carrots, which also comes from a vendor.
When they reach adulthood, if their stats are high enough, they can earn 400g per day doing tasks. (Without high stats, they'll likely fail. You'll still get half the money though.) When they're teens, they can make 200 for a successful job/100 for failed.
If your chick happens to get hurt/sick, you can either just wait it out or ask one of us for some greens -- many of us have tons of them on hand. You don't need to check them every day (though it helps). There are care plans you can set.
The most expensive "med" (a salad, actually) is for love sickness, and costs about 100K. Almost no one uses those -- you can just wait it out as well.
