This video shows a woman's transformation from normal everyday woman to supermodel. I've watched it a bunch of times, because it's just so fascinating to see her go from a woman you wouldn't look twice at in a supermarket to a woman on a billboard.

The point of the video is sad, but admittedly I keep getting distracted by the coolness factor and don't focus so much on the message in it.

Ooh, I've heard of this video from a friend and very much wanted to see it, so thanks for the link!

Yeah. Lowering her eyes and making them bigger, making her neck longer? Even with all the makeup on the planet, girls couldn't do that! I feel sorry for anyone who even tries.

I've always known that the pictures were touched up, or photoshoped, but I know most people didn't believe me. Hell, I've seen shots where the model's waist was narrowed, ribs removed, to create the impossible shape that seems to be in demand.

...wow. That surprises me. Major photoshop work is done even on photos of girls entering beauty contests (which strikes me as highly silly -- what, they're not going to later notice that you look different?).

I've seen shots where the model's waist was narrowed, ribs removed, to create the impossible shape that seems to be in demand.

I saw one shot where they lengthened the model's legs by 25% (she was on a couch, not standing). If they stood that image-woman up, she would have been eight feet tall. :P

Also, nip/tuck anyone?

Just where did these "standards" came from anyways? It's not like the magazine publishers woke up one day and decided they'll start photoshopping pictures of their models. I recall reading/watching something about making the perfect woman, where the "best" eyes, ears, nose, etc. were pasted together to form a giant fighting robot. (She looked kinda gross.) There were also studies done on the science and math of beauty, with all kinds of eye-nose, torso-lower body length, forehead width-face length ratios being deemed "most visually appealing", which I suppose is what the editing is based on. What people need to realize is that there is no way all of these qualities can be found on one person, as Void said quoting Wilde.

That's a good question. My guess is that they said "Hey, X month's magazine sold Y% more than usual! Let's look at who was on the cover...". So I'm guessing it's consumer-driven, really.

Intriguing.

I had a...I hesitate to say 'friend,' but the relative of a friend whom we helped out in a number of situations. She was a model. Did the exotic photo-shoots and the full bit. Had this huge luggage set filled with makeup stuffs. She was...very unattractive without it. When in full model mode, I didn't find her much more attractive. Less acne, and various other obvious skin problems were covered...I guess I subscribe a bit to the Oscar Wilde idea - "The only perfection lies in being flawed, the only flawlessness lies in imperfection." Its the trying to be so much more than you are that I find disturbing and hideous unattractive. 'Faustian Striving' I think the phrase is.

Yeah. I don't find the 'after' version of this woman pants-buriningly hot, but it's still a big difference.

I sort of feel bad for these women -- imagine walking down the street and having someone say 'Hey, aren't you X? Boy, you're ugly without your makeup on!'. When it seems all they have is their looks, that must be especially painful.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I was amused at the photoshopping.

I wish there was a way to slow it down or pause it (hmm, wonder if right-clicking would bring up an option to pause, I should try that), I'd really like to see the photoshop part in more detail.

Dammit. First comment got eaten. I'll try again.

I find it really creepy that they have to lengthen the model's neck and give her a completely new set of eyes. I hear that they'll sometimes even crop one model's head onto another model's body, so I guess you can never be sure if you're looking at one whole woman or a dab of this and a dab of that.

I'd love to see a fitness or beauty magazine that had the guts to show unretouched photos of models who did their OWN hair and makeup. Or, if that's too revolutionary, at least some of those ubiquitous "before" and "after" pics that had equal amounts of hairstylin', makeup, and flatteringly-colored clothing in both photos.

I'd love to see that as well, but I bet it wouldn't sell. I don't totally blame the magazines/makeup companies/etc for this issue, the buyers are just as much at fault. :/

It must be so depressing to be a model. Not only are you valued for only your looks (and how long will those last?), you can have your parts interchanged with other parts and no one would care.

Heh... reminds me of someone I know, or well, used to know.
I dated a girl in highschool who ended up being a model, she moved to France and poses there for cosmetic and clothing photoshoots.
Funny thing is I did recognize her in some pictures (never really looked for any, but my mom reads those crappy glossy magazines and then goes like "Oh my god, look its Rachel!") but somehow she never looked the same... this explains why though.
Kinda sad, those small imperfections were always what attracted me in some way, as with the said girl, I used to love those few freckles on her nose and the blemishes she had on her lower stomach (and she had a few more pounds, thus a nicer ass), and now it does make an awful lot of sense why those freckles arent in her pics anymore.

Eh.. call me old-fashioned (or a godless savage pagan, /poke nai) but I like the natural looks of a girl way better than any of this.. just the face you see when waking up together. Im probably weird for saying that but meh,Im known for being weird. >_>

I said you were a godless pagan, not a savage. ;3 There's a difference.

Nah, I think that's normal (and healthy!). I'd rather have a "person" as well, instead of some perfect image.

(or a godless savage pagan, /poke nai)

We can be godless together, baby~

Damn, now I want to get made-over and photoshopped, just to see what the result looks like. xD

Do a websearch. It'd cost some money, but there are places that do nothing but that. :) Submit a photo and they'll make you into a beauty queen!
