RL was meh. Work is annoying right now (the whole daylight savings time change has increased my work by ten fold. Just another thing to thank Bush for~!). At least the weather cooled.

Smoothie Of The Day: Meh. Good idea, but didn't work out well. The strawberries I bought on Sunday were going moldy (bah!) so I only got to use a few. Added in a half of a banana (I don't like them, but try to eat them now and then), what strawberries I could save, and a bit of orange juice to frozen no-fat vanilla yogurt. Was semi-okay, but not sweet enough -- almost sour/bitter/tangy.

And know what? Freezing and then thawing bananas does not work. Not unless you want a mess of brown goo floating in yucky liquid. :P (I didn't use these, tossed them out! Ewww!)

---

FFXI: I feel really bad. Besieged hit in the middle of our Assault static (gods above, every week! How many Assault statics have we had without a Besieged happening in the middle?), but this time we didn't go. RL even caused a 45 minute downtime in the middle (unexpected, and even if we had expected it, wouldn't have been long enough to attend), but we just waited at the Assault gate. We lost the Besieged, and I felt just awful -- not because we missed it, not because we lost it, but because I feel like... like it's people's duty to attend if they're online when there's an attack. (I know this is totally just me and others do not share my opinion. I don't expect everyone to!)

See, I love (LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE) the idea of defending the city from attacking beastmen. (From the first time I started playing this game, I said how cool it would be if the orcs attacked Sandy.) I love that city even more than I do Sandy, and it fills me with pride to be able to help defend it. It feels like a good thing, it feels like an important thing. (I know, I know. It's a game, it's not a real city or real monsters, but that doesn't change how it makes me feel. When the Besieged ends and we get the success music and the CS, I sit up straighter and grin, my chest feels full. It's so cool to be a part of such a big, important thing!)

So, personally, I feel like I let everyone down by not attending. The city was taken. We were lost. And it happened while I was standing around scratching my ass at a BC gate.

I feel like I failed, like I was worse than a slacker: I put personal business before my "duty" to the city. :/

(***Please note that I'm not blaming anyone for anything. RL happens to everyone, and static is scheduled for this night. This is just how I feel, and it's why I was so darned antsy as we waited.***)

Anyway, so after we finished Assaulting (13 x 4 again. zzzz), I had nothing left to do. Mostly I just watched TV.

FFXI PSA: The FFXI AH site is now fully open! You can register! Add an online bazaar! Post a want-list! Set your transactions to show any number from 0-255 transactions! YAY!

Unfortunately, one to four more people in there would not have made a difference. 10-20 more people might have. Take some small comfort in the fact that it wouldn't have won the day, not when they won so quickly after beating the last general. Had it dragged out, we might have made a difference, but so quickly? No way in hell.

Ha ha, you caught me. After spending the last hour debating if I should delete the post or not, I decided to. But it got a comment already, so I won't!

I really hope you (and everyone else in the static) don't feel bad or insulted, this is just a... torn thing in me. In total, cold, real reality, first priority goes to the static. We're RL people spending RL time doing these runs. My feelings for Besieged are... are... based on not-real stuff. It's hard to describe. Not skipping/delaying static is the right thing to do, even though it "feels" wrong.

And yeah, you're right. Even if all of us had gone (which is unlikely) we probably wouldn't have made a real difference.

Back to bed with me~! Talk to you tomorrow.

I understand the feeling. I logged on yesterday to take care of CoP stuff and finish off the things I didn't get done Monday, saw there was a Beseiged, and seriously considered it. My stuff wasn't urgent, but I really did want to get it done yesterday, so I kept going. But when I heard that we lost, I thought, "Dang, I should've been there."

Beseiged is fun, and honestly, attending the occasional one isn't going to throw me out of whack with my static. (I think I'm behind the two newer members but ahead of the three older ones.) Also, if I don't show up and help, then I've got no right to complain when the AC is missing. ;p

Also, I commend you for your bravery in eating bananas. I cannot stand them, even though I know how good they are. But the smell of them makes me feel nauseous.

Yes! They smell awful, they taste bad, and the texture? *twitch* I can only eat them (and only a half-one at most) when they're really brown. The taste and smell are more mild that way.

Freezing and then thawing bananas does not work.

hehe. But(!), you know what does work? Freezing bananas and then putting them into the blender like that! For an example, head to Posh Bagel on Castro ;) They chop and freeze all the fruit, and then scoop add it frozen when you order a smoothie. I imagine that might work!

The fact you got a full day out of the strawberries is something. Honestly, when I'd go to Albertsons/Safeway? I'd pickup a pint of fruit and at least half the container would be spoiled *at the store*! It's extremely frustrating.

Sorry to hear about the Candy-sense. =( I can understand how you feel, at least. ^^;

Fruit can't be frozen in a regular freezer without too much cell damage. Ice crystals puncturing cell walls makes for the icky goo Thistle saw with frozen bananas.

The trick is that you have to flash-freeze fruit, which prevents ice crystals from growing large enough to puncture the cell walls. This can be done easily with liquid nitrogen, which isn't all that readily available and requires special handling, or dry ice, which requires a styrofoam cooler. Just fill the cooler halfway or less with dry ice, drop in pieces of fruit, wait a minute or so, then move fruit to a plastic bag and hurredly place in freezer. A standard freezer is enough to keep properly frozen fruit frozen, just not enough to freeze it properly in the first place.

Science + food = yum.

You know, I saw that on Good Eats. I should have remembered it!

Mostly I'm going to just buy already frozen fruit and use the fresh stuff fresh. (Though maybe keep freezing and using the frozen bananas while frozen, to make the drinks colder.)

Yep that's what I did! I chopped the bananas up, wrapped them in plastic, put those in zip-lock bags, then tossed them in the freezer. Now I can add them frozen, already chopped up!

Yes! >< I try never to buy fruit there anymore, other than something "stable" like apples...

With no one going out to rescue prisoners, even the generals, I'm not surprised that we finally lost. If it's not back by Friday, I'm going on a rescue mission.

And eww, frozen bananas. My grandma used to give us bananas that she had frozen in our stocking at Xmas. She froze everything. Never freeze milk is the only other thing I'll add. =o

(the whole daylight savings time change has increased my work by ten fold. Just another thing to thank Bush for~!).

So the president gets slammed for his lack of an enery policy... then when he actually comes up with an exceptionally creative way to save a ton of energy (Seriously, shifting DST so that Billions of people are turning on their lights at night 1 hour later, a whole month earlier than usual, saves an enormous amount of energy!) he's slammed for the inconvenience? How rediculously silly.

Because there's no other side to that...?

Last week I had no need to turn lights on in the morning. This week I have to turn lights on in the morning.

And to illustrate just how far apart on him we are: I boggled/laughed that you used "the president" and "exceptionally creative" in the same sentence.

I don't turn lights on in the morning... so for me, the lamps in my house get pretty much 1 full hour less of use a day.

So then the question is... are there more of me or more of you? If me, the shiftng DST is an enormous success... If you, then it's not. I guess we'll just have to see.

I'm gonna leave any political leanings out of it and admit that I personally like the earlier start to Daylight Savings Time. With my work schedule, I leave home late enough that it's light at any time of year. However, it's not until DST kicks in that I get home in the light. This means that when DST is in effect, I don't have to leave a lights on at my place during the workday, so I am saving energy that way.

Also, and this is completely personal, though I'd imagine there are others who feel the same way, it's far less depressing and stressful to have some light left when I get home. I spend a lot of the day in an area without windows; there are some days when the only light I see is what I get in the morning and what I get while walking around at work.

So yeah, I'm happy, but I'll emphasize the singular first-person pronoun. ^_~

I'm such an odd person! I love it when it gets dark at 5 (or earlier if I leave earlier). I miss having a window at work (boo, cube walls all around me), but I really enjoy the dark more than the light.

I'd rather have it be dark in the morning, too. So basically I need days where we get maybe 5-6 hours of daylight, all happening while I'm at work. :P

I apologize in advance for being pedantic, but 'billions'? The US still has a population of 30+ million, and since, as far as I know, U.S policy =/= World policy, it doesn't affect anyone else. Heck, there are still countries that have no concept of DST.

and while we're being pedantic... 30+ million is rather low... the current US population is 301,377,397 according to http://www.census.gov

That FFXI auction house thing is way cool, Laura was showing it a bit. I wish that was around when I played. :) It is really funny - I keep hearing about all the great changes being made, but then my lovely and talented wife reminds me that the thing I /really/ hated are still there, so any temptation to return is quashed. <3

As to the DST thing -- I can see why you'd be annoyed at the extra work. :) My job has been made more complicated due to the change as well, so I feel your pain. As to Bush, regardless of the DST change, I can't wait until he's gone. Thank goodness he's a lame duck, instead of just lame. A lame duck who's party doesn't control Congress any more. Yay! He can do less damage now! Now if only the Democrats will field a presidential candidate worth voting for I'd be happy.

Jeb Bush has no chance. Republican will go to Giuliani or McCain (unlikely), Democrat to Clinton, Obama, maybe Gore.

And Hillary Clinton has no chance of taking the presidency if she gets her primary.

Giuliani ftw~ \o.o/ *koff* I really wish we could get an Independant/Moderate to run and actually have more than a snowball's chance in hell of getting more than maybe 5% of the vote (though technically Mr.G is moderate, his social values don't really line up with his republican ticket).

Also, how the hell did DST turn into a political discussion? >_> Only in your journal, Thistle!

Every time I hear about your problems with food, I can't help but be baffled. I always thought that the West Coast was the defacto fruit and veggie producing area of the country because of its' ability to grow quality produce year round, but it seems like you go through more issues with produce than I've ever had.

Well, this problem was caused by me, but we do tend to have fruit/veggie issues even though we have tons of farmlands. I can't explain it...
