Tomorrow all the LJ servers are moving halfway across the country. I'm sure they'll do backups and whatever, but either way it's a good idea to make a backup on your own today. My journal is more than eight years old and I darned well don't want to lose it now!

I personally use ljArchive, which saves not only your posts but all your comments as well. Plus it's searchable, which really comes in handy!

Edit: Let's how that this isn't how the servers will be moved! ;)

How're they going to get their servers from San Fransisco to Montana in 4 hours? o_O

They must have some kind of backup system I'm not aware of.

And yet more jobs move out of California. :P

That's a good idea! I didn't even think about that.

If you saw how much paperwork BS and additional fees/taxes/regulations California businesses have to go through, you would be be surprised that anybody stays!

We packed up and moved to Washington.

Hmmm, actually you have a good point. I suppose they'll just be moving the data to new servers there, not shipping the actual servers themselves. *not awake yet, brain isn't warmed up yet*

Ha ha, just what we need! :P

I started backing up a few years ago, back when LJ was amazingly unstable. (Were you around when posts just vanished instead of actually being posted? That lasted for a good couple months...)

I'm still a noob...I have been on LJ about a year and a half now. LJ seems much better than IJ though. I could never post over there, and just gave up after a while.

Yeah no kidding. How is Washington anyway? If I had to move anywhere else it would probably be to the pacific northwest.

Yeah, LJ seems the best of the IJ/GJ/LJ crowd, at least for tech/site/stability/code reasons. I know some people left for "political" reasons...

Washington is fantastic. Lots of CA escapees end up over here. Seattle is very similar to San Francisco, and the inland side where we live is just gorgeous. We sold a tract house with a postage stamp size yard in CA, and bought a 60 acre mini-ranch here. We checked out Oregon also, but didn't like it quite as much.

Oh, and there is no personal state income tax in WA, my car insurance is less than half of what it was in LA, utility costs are low, and no wildfires!
If you can handle cold winters, WA is a very nice place to live.

Oooh, good idea. I hadn't backed up in quite a while. Thanks for the reminder!

dont worry about how the servers will be moved, because they wont be physically moved.
They will "scp" everything from one box to another and update the A records for the dns. Thats what is going to take 4 hours.
