Nearly half of the LJ staff laid off (with no no severance). No, this doesn't mean it's being shut down tomorrow, but it's not a great sign. Making backups is never a bad thing even under the best of conditions.

LJ Archive is your friend.

Edit: Oops. I posted before reading my flist. My flooded with LJ-dooooom flist. :P If you're seeing this link/warning multiple times, sorry!

Sadly, LJ Archive is not my friend as it's Windows-only.

Bryant's got a good post on how to back up on non-Windows computers (and specifically Mac): http://bryant.livejournal.com/659249.html

Yay, thanks for the link! I'll pass it along as needed.

Oops! I guess it's a Windows-only friend then. :/ Glad Kirby had a link for you and anyone else on another OS!

It's particularly telling that the staff laid off were product managers and engineers. I.e. LiveJournal is a dead-end.

Gentleman (and ladies), start your migration engines now!

Yeah... assuming the site could be kept stable, I'd be fine with it staying as-is. I don't need new features! But how are you going to keep it stable without engineers?

After I bought a permanent account I always worried the site would shut down...
