Non-BSG update (FFXI, RP)
Feb. 23rd, 2009 09:50 pmA while back I had said I was going to take a FFXI break and play WoW for a month, but I really hadn't felt like playing either game, so I never turned WoW back on. That feeling has only gotten worse.
Doesn't help that I was skilling gold on Damask. Again. Fifth time of doing gold 1-60. That's what hell is going to be like for me, having to skill gold over and over. It's even worse because I'm so utterly sick of crafting. Not "meh, just need a break before I start another mule~! *bouncie*", I mean like I never want to do another synth, skill up or not.
Got gold to 57.7. I thought I could send Damask home (I need things he has in storage!), then I noticed that those colored Almirahs take an alchemy subcraft... so Damask has to stay in Bastok and do that sub now. (PS: I'm kicking myself for not just buying him an airship pass when I had the chance.)
I hate Bastok so much. It's so damned dirty. Yay for a city made out of grimy, soot-covered stone. And have you been in the alchemy guild there? Oh yay, let me do a craft where every damned NPC in the guild is coughing, talking about being sick, wanting to go to the hospital, or inhaling fumes (GET A CLUE!). Lovely craft. So happy to be doing it. Again.
Have I mentioned that I've done alchemy 1-60 five times already, too? *gun to head*
I'd not be logging on to FFXI at all if I had anything better to do. Funny that I can't recall what I did with my life before this damned game.
RP is the high point of my non-work hours, and luckily I've been getting it almost daily! One day I actually got two scenes! (I don't know if you can count one of them though. It was with what must have been the worst player on the game. I had never ICly met her before, and on her second pose she had her hands all over Thistle, touching him, groping him... god, I felt like I needed a shower RL. She just didn't take a clue, either. He moved away, she followed and tried to put her arms around him. Her description was rather disturbing, too. "She has scars all over her face and body, a sharp nose, sunken eyes.... but she's beautiful! Beautiful, I tell you!". WTF?) All the other RP rocked though. Squall rescued Thistle (called him an idiot and told him to come home~ Eee, so cute!), met an Immortal and later had to defend their ship from her (heehee!), and other assorted adventures.
It's funny when you just notice something really basic about your character. I hadn't really realized just how optimistic Thistle is...
I'm cutting these poses down to just the important parts. Also, usually I don't like posing thoughts/things the other person can't see, but in this case the scene's style was going that way...
Starting with her pose, each paragraph is a new pose. They were at a Valentine's Day event:
That's when she spots the snuggling couple and turns her nose up in disgust. Really, did they have to engage in such public acts of display for all to see? She snorts in disgust, and starts to stalk off, before she catches sight of a familiar figure and she slows down a bit, peering at him thoughtfully. Was he....Watching the couple and daydreaming? Honestly.. "Thistle?"
Isn't it nice that the couple is so in love that they're snuggling out in public without giving it a second thought? Thistle misses love that strong, misses knowing the person beside you will always be there, misses the fun of touch-- Huh? He lifts his head, coming out of his thoughts at the sound of his name being called.
"Hmph. Look at them. Have they no decency? Out in public like that, as if the rest of us want to see their business." Bah humbug. Love did not concern her in the least. What a weak emotion, it could destroy people so easily, it could bring them to their knees.
Love brought Thistle to his knees. It put him where he is today. Dead. But he wouldn't give up what he had, not with most of his loves anyway. Nai, the first one, the one who went Immortal on him, he hasn't forgiven her yet... And forgiven or not, lost loves do cause aches in Thistle's heart, but they also warm him with fond memories and hopes of reuniting one day... as unlikely of a hope as that is.
[RP goes on a bit, then she posed about having no one to love.]
Thistle, on the other hand, has had plenty of love. It's just too bad all of them didn't end very well. His first love became an Immortal, a Corsair's mortal enemy. The second, a fellow Corsair, likely had a hand in Thistle's death. The third, an undercover Immortal, ended up capturing, torturing, and brainwashing Thistle. But still, it doesn't look like the holiday has got Thistle down. He's sitting on a low wooden fence near the docked Shera airship, leaned forward, hands on the railing to keep himself from tumbling off, trying to indirectly watch the snuggling couple. It's pretty obvious he's watching though, a longful little smile on his lips, dreamy look in his eyes.
It's strange. All the years I've been playing Thistle, I never put his story together in my head like that. He's been hurt so much, so often, by those he loves, but he never loses hope. RL me would have given up on love after the first bad relationship. He focuses on the good, I (sadly) focus on the bad.
I've never enjoyed playing "good guy" characters, I always like being the bad guy, which makes it strange that Thistle is my longest-played character. I (and he!) don't like to think it, but I guess he really is a good guy. :P (He thinks of himself as a big mean eeeevvvvil Dark Knight and a dangerous violent Corsair, but he loves kittens and babies and wants to protect the world. :P)
Yay RP! I feel better just typing all that up. :D

Hmm, this is as close to a MUSH icon that I have. Headwiz Thistle!

Date: 2009-02-24 11:00 am (UTC)I only RPed when I was younger so my brain never really thought about it in this way but it does now; I think that most people RP as one of 2 things. It will either be the person they are, be it behind the mask they wear in real life in public, or it will be the person they wish they could be.
Going off what you said it's probably the later in your case. When I think about it, it's not so much that it's strange that one can RP and find things in opposition to how they are. It's a good way to find out what you want, where you want to be, what you wish to be like. That is the hope to change who we are and what we act like.
People can change, not all of them, but most can. All that's really needed is a target...and 2 legs to take you in the direction you want to head.
Sorry, I didn't goto sleep tonight. Was playing Gears of War 2 for like 5 hours and I'm tired and thus this kinda stuff happens >.>

GS skilling up
Date: 2009-02-24 11:02 am (UTC)Good thing you talk about skilling up GS : I've been stuck at 56 forever, and I want to finally cap it at 60.
I thought of these synths :
- lv36 rings : hard to find enough Mythril Ring +1
- Gold Arrowheads : they never sell
- Mythril Cuisses : rarely sell but they're cheap so why not
- Platinum ingots : more expensive
What synths do you usually do at these levels ?
Re: GS skilling up
Date: 2009-02-24 06:47 pm (UTC)Waste of a HQ ring, IMO.
Gold Arrowheads : they never sell
Could vendor them? Though I've never tried making them.
Mythril Cuisses : rarely sell but they're cheap so why not
That's what I do, vendoring them after.
Platinum ingots : more expensive
With a few of those tossed in as I get ores/coins.

Date: 2009-02-24 01:21 pm (UTC)I'm letting gold get to 60 on its own, as I get platinum ores from digging and the very occasional mining trip. They don't sell very fast anyway; have 2 on the AH right now that will probably be back in my DB when I get home.
Bastok doesn't look sooty or grimy to me. A bit spartan, though.

That's a good way to do it. (That's how I usually finish alchemy too -- flint stone synths!)

Running to the alchemy guild is where I especially see the grime. The bricks/stones are already unevenly cut and put into the wall, add a layer of brown grime to it...

Date: 2009-02-24 04:22 pm (UTC)I think all your RP posts are part of what's made me want to do some RP of my own lately. But I don't really have the time. ^^; I gave it up back then partly because I wanted to spend more time on FFXI and partly because my groups were just moving too slowly. MUSH-ing is all about scenes and poses and such, which is my favorite part, but I was doing BESM and D&D. While I enjoy a good fight sometimes, tabletop RPGs really are primarily about the fighting, and I preferred the RP.
Cydori thinks Thistle needs a hug, but is afraid to since he'll probably take that as too much encouragement. ;p Does MUSH-Thistle actually have any female friends who he's not trying to hit on all the time? ^_~
Also, the latest BSG ep is apparently not on the torrent yet. Boo. ;_; If I can't get it by this Friday then I'll tape the new episode and catch up on both whenever I can find episode 16.

Ha ha not really The MUSH's theme is that people from random FF games (FCs or original characters) are either picked up at random and dropped onto the MUSH or die and wake up there.
. But I don't really have the time. ^^;
Luckily RP scenes tend to go so slowly that you can multitask. I often RP during Dynamis! ;)

*gropes a Cy!* I always knew you wanted me~ :E
But seriously, MUSH Thistle never hits on anyone. He had someone he loved before he died, so he feels he should be loyal to that person. (Which is sad, since he's highly unlikely he'll ever go back to his original world... so he'll basically be alone for life.)
Also, the latest BSG ep is apparently not on the torrent yet.
Oh? I thought I just watched the latest one. http://isohunt.com/torrent_details/67413089/?tab=comments isn't the newest one? 16? (If it's not, yay! One more to watch still!)

Date: 2009-02-24 06:58 pm (UTC)...they have such an abusive friendship, don't they? ^^;
I don't have a windower, and my multitasking skill is such that I don't think I could combine other things with FFXI even if I did. But if I'm hanging out on IRC (which I don't do all that much) I could probably multitask then. But like I said, I really shouldn't be making plans to join anything until RL gets less busy. If I'm still interested in a few months, your MU* will still be there. ^^
And huh, maybe the episode wasn't up last night when we looked. I'll check again tonight.

Date: 2009-02-24 10:58 pm (UTC)I understand that a staffer would look at this issue differently (has to look at it differently), but as a player I enjoy having the freedom to be able to follow the "live and let live" idea. If she squicks people they'll stop RPing with her, and eventually she'll go away. (Or perhaps she'll make some horndog happy and they can TS until they're blue in the face. ...though that might make new staff problems!)
To be long winded about this seemingly simple issue, I've thought a whole lot about it since that scene. It kind of reminds me of RL sexual issues society is dealing with... (Which is why I'd rather not make my complaints about her official... but to compare this with gay rights or more-than-two-people-marriages issues reflects poorly on those issues... )
Blah. I'll just stop typing and post this comment before I wander further off topic. :D
