What a boring weekend... (WoW, FFXI)
Mar. 8th, 2009 07:42 pmAt the rate I'm going, I'm going to have to find some non-videogame thing to do.
Opening Death Knight has been the most fun thing I've done on WoW so far. I love how "backwards" it is (how often in a zombie movie are you with the zombies attacking the town instead of one of the townspeople?). I love how the NPCs "aggro" you by screaming and begging for their lives when you come near. I loved the feel of the whole starter area.I loved how the Lich King whispered sweet nothings into my ear, distracting me while I was doing quests.
The final "CS" was damned confusing though, and I was surprised to see I could die during it (because I did!). I left the whole area after the battle ended and couldn't find what to do next. Eventually I wandered close enough to notice some NPCs were talking to each other, so I listened in case there would be a clue. Turns out it was more of the CS. WTF? What a, um, different way to handle CSs. c.c *cough*
I was muchly sad at the end of the storyline. (OMG spoiler coming!) You turn into a good guy after all that? BAH! I wanted to keep working for the Lich King! That was interesting! Different! Cool! But again, man, the whole storyline was so messed up and cool. Killing innocent people, killing the person from your past who remembers you... good stuff. If only it had stayed like that.
Speaking of, this is the funniest effect ever.

The townspeople didn't like me while they thought I was still evil!
Unfortunately, once I totally finished Death Knight and had to go back to normal XPing, I lost 100% of my interest in it. If I was going to XP, I might as well do it on my Hunter-- hey, wonder how he's doing? So I switched characters, and recoiled from the screen. I just a couple days, I had forgotten how eye-bleedingly ugly he was. Blah. So I could play a job I liked less on a good looking character or the job I like on a horribly ugly character. Turns out I did neither! I couldn't make myself go gather 10 bloody wolf claws or 15 voodoo flasks or whatever the NPCs wanted me to do.
I wish DK could have stayed different. (I liked the beginning so much I dreamed about it two nights in a row!). I like my horse an awful lot (it's so fast! Faster than my hunter's mount +20% extra), but I just can't bring myself to do these same quests again. Not just again once, but now for two characters. Blah.
So, for lack of anything else to do, I logged onto FFXI. A low level BLU was hunting spells, so I helped for a couple hours. Then... nothing. Been standing in my MH for hours. Blah.
Where has my interest in the games gone! WoW I kind of expected this (my interest rarely lasts more than a week), but why won't my love for FFXI come back?
Don't make me find some new hobby, you two, because I will. ~.~

Date: 2009-03-09 11:02 am (UTC)I made my DK just around the time that my Paladin hit Outlands, so when I was doing the same quests I had just done, I was kinda bored. I ended up finishing my Paladin and had planned to go to DK, but then I started working my Priest and found that I like Rogue too! So DK will probably come after those two are finished.
It doesn't seem like I have the same problem with my second DK, but that's probably because it's from an Alliance PoV (Started leveling a char on my friend's server during spare time, kinda want to get some raiding/heroic experience so I can share it with my regular guild. =D).

Date: 2009-03-09 02:23 pm (UTC)I've actually done the DK starter quests twice, and liked it both times.
Heh! I was thinking about doing it a second time, too. :D
It's too bad you can't get into that starter area once you're finished, I'd love to walk through that village again and see how the (few!) survivors reacted to me. Heh heh heh.

Date: 2009-03-09 08:38 pm (UTC)However, it got a little boring, so I decided to try out Frost since a buddy of mine went Frost from the beginning and loves it. I'm only level 65 so I don't have my full arsenal available to me but Frost is interesting. A lot of crit-boosting talents, so I see nice big numbers. I've only played it for one night so far but I'll see how it goes. I don't play my DK very much since I have a level 80 rogue and a level 79 paladin already, with another 3 alts in the 70s. Spoiled for choice :)

Date: 2009-03-09 08:52 pm (UTC)I wonder if it's because I'm low level (not quite 60 on it yet), but DK doesn't feel like the overpowered monster that everyone describes it as. My hunter, five levels lower, feels a whole lot stronger (and more importantly: safer).

Date: 2009-03-09 09:15 pm (UTC)You should also get glyphs that are appropriate for whichever spec you choose, since they can make quite a difference. For instance, Glyph of Obliterate increases the damage of Obliterate (level 61 skill) by 20%. If you're Frost, Obliterate is one of your main skills, so the Glyph is a really nice boost. Glyph of Icy Touch is another nice one for Frost death knights -- it makes your Icy Touch generate 10 more runic power, which is useful because Frost spec has a major skill called Frost Strike which uses runic power to do damage.
Here's a Blood spec (for level 59) that you might like: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=jcbGqIcIsf0zzA
And here's a Frost spec (also level 59) that should do nicely: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=jZGMxthxdRhoVosL
Both specs give you a few on-use abilities with 1, 2 or 3 minute cooldowns that are useful for either killing something fast (e.g. Deathchill's guaranteed crit) or increasing your chance of surviving (Rune Tap's heal).

Date: 2009-03-13 01:15 am (UTC)Ah, true, you're right. (It'd probably be overpowered if it were able to.)
You should also get glyphs
*coughs* Glyphs are some new thing that were introduced while I was gone. I keep meaning to look them up and find out about them...

Date: 2009-03-13 02:01 pm (UTC)The official website has a small section on glyphs as well: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/professions/inscription.html#glyphs
These are the Death Knight glyphs currently available: http://www.wowhead.com/?items=16.6
And these are the Hunter glyphs currently available: http://www.wowhead.com/?items=16.3

Date: 2009-03-09 09:40 pm (UTC)As for frost spec it's really great at 80 for me. I'm totally geared to tank so I can fight like 6 level 80 mobs at once, barely take any damage, and the way frost works I can effectively crit all 6 of those mobs at once for 4k damage with 1 move. Ya! Although a point of warning on if you mess around with frost. When the 3.1 patch comes out like half of the frost tree is moving around.

*gasp!* You? Tank? No wai!

Date: 2009-03-13 07:24 am (UTC)With 3.1 it's a lot easier to get a permanent pet with a hybrid spec. Since it will only take 15 points to unlock the tree level in unholy that the passive ability will reside on (so 16 points to actually have it) and at 80 you can easily have enough to get to the end of one tree and then that and then even a few more left over depending on how you spec. I'm actually trying to figure out how to respec when 3.1 comes out to get a permanent pet as a tank.
