On Tuesday, State Rep. Betty Brown (R) caused a firestorm during House testimony on voter identification legislation when she said that Asian-Americans should change their names because they’re too hard to pronounce:

“Rather than everyone here having to learn Chinese — I understand it’s a rather difficult language — do you think that it would behoove you and your citizens to adopt a name that we could deal with more readily here?” Brown said.

Brown later told [Organization of Chinese Americans representative Ramey] Ko: “Can’t you see that this is something that would make it a lot easier for you and the people who are poll workers if you could adopt a name just for identification purposes that’s easier for Americans to deal with?”

Yesterday, Brown continued to resist calls to apologize. Her spokesman said that Democrats “want this to just be about race.”

Hahahahaha. XD I shouldn't find that as funny as I do, but the pure stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze and amuse. Not only is she insulting these people, but she's also discrediting the average intelligence of most American citizens by assuming we can't cope with a foreign name.

*snickers* Exactly, yes.

Because names from a smattering of European countries each with their own unique rules of pronunciation are all so much easier than those crazy, phonetic Asian names!

Come on now! Just look at the story! Ko? Ko? Who could pronounce that! I mean, it's like assuming anyone could pronounce Lee!

Yeah, because that shit worked so well in the late 1800s and isn't racist at all.

Seriously, is this bitch for real? I keep waiting to hear news reports saying that she's been beamed back up to the Mother Ship or something.

For real and probably beloved in Texas!

The fact that I probably can't refute that is possibly the saddest part of all.

Because 'Ko' is just so hard to pronounce. :)

Seriously, if we're going to force people to change their name for this reason, our target should be Polish Americans. The Meintkeiwitc and Straczynskis of the world really are hard to spell and pronounce!

In other words, Betty Brown is a racist asshole.

Exactly! I'd rather pronounce Lee than Meintkeiwitc or something along those lines.

In other words, Betty Brown is a racist asshole.

I'm amused at the last part of the story, where she claims it's not race-related at all...

My family anglicized our name when we came to Canada, and the original Ukrainian is easier to pronounce than the "anglicized" version.

Texas really needs to break off and be its own little country. They'd probably be happier that way, too!

coincidentally.. Texas is the only state in the union that has the ability to legally secede from the union.
