It is shocking how little people know about basic physics, history, math, geography, UNcommon courtesy, UNcommon sense, UNcommon decency... [KingAndI]Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera[/KingAndI]
I admit to not being terribly well informed myself, and I'm way ahead of the curve. =) Sadly.
To miss sprinkler generated rainbows in 30+ years of life is pathetic beyond my limited ability to articulate. The sad thing is that I bet that lady congratulated herself on being a concerned citizen looking out for the welfare of her neighbors. I hope she showed the video to some of them and had one take her aside 'Uh...Jane Doe...do you know what refraction is?'.

Not only do people not value education, they think [insert whatever religion they believe] is just as valid as real, scientific education. It's both sad and worrying!
It goes beyond that. Religious fanaticism has set scientific progress back hundreds of years already. Imagine if Alan Turing hadn't been convicted of the "crime" of homosexuality, causing him to take his own life. This is the father of modern computers we're talking about. Imagine if people hadn't been burned as "heretics" for suggesting that the Earth isn't flat. And that's just the theoretical sciences. Think of the hundred plus years that doctors weren't allowed to study human cadavers because of religious objections. Think of all of the lives that could have been saved if medical science had had access to that kind of study material a hundred years earlier. I won't even comment on stem cell research, I'll just get myself in trouble. Plus I'll start to sound like I'm sucking Richard Dawkins' cock even though I don't have a problem with people being religious when they're not stupid or fanatical about it.
And to reply to the video...I clearly remember seeing rainbows in sprinklers 25 years ago, and that's about as far back as I'm even capable of remembering.
I love this video. I actually sent the link to my son's science teacher last year during the unit on light refraction so he could show it to the kids and they could congratulate themselves on being smarter than the dodo who made this video even though they are only 13 years old. Every time I watch it, it makes me giggle.
XD This is soooo very sad. And of course if anybody tried to tell her that it was refraction she would probably accuse them of being part of a vast government conspiracy.
Gah! It's stupid people like this who mess up the real conspiracies that actually make sense and are based on logic and facts instead of just crazy whoopy doo "OH MAH GOD! RAINBOW CAUSE BY WATERZ! AHHHHH!"
I'm surprised she didn't make some sort of connection like RAINBOWS ARE WHAT GAY PEOPLE LIKE SO THE GOVERNMENT IS PUTTING STUFF INTO THE WATER TO MAKE US ALL GAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember the movie Idiocracy? ---> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/
She said that like they said 'It has elocrolytes, what your body craves!' in the movie - rote repetition with no clue of what it actually meant. =)
