As part of my change from lunch, I was given a golden coin. Somewhat larger than a quarter, I actually thought it was some kind of a game token at first. It was heavy though, didn't feel cheap, so I kept it instead of asking for a "real" dollar. Coming back to the office, I googled. Apparently there's been a program getting these out for a while now, and will continue until 2014!

So, if you get one, don't be surprised. Mine looks like this one, but the picture doesn't do it justice -- it looks like a real golden coin. Pretty darned cool! I'm going to hold onto it instead of spending it.

Oh yeah! I got some of those last year as change from a car wash.

I'm hoping to get more... though not enough that I'd actually go into a bank and ask.

I got a handful of those during vacation last summer. Kidlet decided that they looked like treasure, and claimed them. I haven't seen them since...they are probably at the bottom of a random drawer.

They do! Like gold coins that pirates would be after. Ha, now I have even more reason to keep this one!

...mine will likely end up in the bottom of a drawer, too.

I prefer them to bills, really. I used to use Sacagaweas whenever I could. It's too bad people are so ridiculous about currency changes; most of the small denominations in Europe are coin-based, and the wallets tend to have coin compartments by default.

Yeah, I really liked the Sacagaweas too and I still have a bunch of them. It's more than a little silly people complained they were inconvenient.

Agreed. I'd much rather use dollar coins. It is a little heavy, carrying nine "singles" would be harder as coins, but it'd still be worth it.

Up side: People with baggy pants would have to invest in a belt in order to keep their clothing actually attached to their body. Or, god forbid, buy pants that actually fit.

Canada's had those for over 20 years. I still remember when the $1 coin (the "loonie") came out. At that time, we still had $2 bills too. Now we have $2 coins called "toonies." I really hate that name, I wish "bear buck" had caught on. (The $2 coin has a bear on it)

Thanks, through simple processing of the two words, I now have the Tiny Toons theme stuck in my head. =(

My favorite nickname for the $2 coin is the "doubloon"!

Canada ftw! I wish we'd start using them more, too.

If you cover up just the bear bodies on the toonie, rotate it around, bam, penguins! I remember when they made the toonies, I was just old enough to remember that change. Wasn't old enough for the Loonie change though.

My mom hoards dollar coins. The bank tellers kinda look at us funny when we ask for dollar coin rollers. She'll take any dollar coins that she sees and put dollar bills in their place. It's her way to save money for something nice. They went on a cruise a few times from that habit.

Yes! They're 100% better in person, too! Like someone said above, they seem more like pirate treasure than "just" a dollar!

I live in Dallas. The DART rail system gives out dollar coins all the time and where I work, people are constantly paying with them to try to get rid of them. They have various presidents on them, though sometimes I get an older coin that has Sacajawea.

Huh! That's cool! I wonder if our rail system (BART, ha!) does the same? Seems like it would make sense.
