Inception came up in my Netflix queue, so I finally got to see the movie I've heard so much about. I don't know if I'm just not in the mood for it or if the 30 minutes of unskippable commercials before the movie soured me on it or if I came in with too high expectations, but man, I'm bored out of my mind. There's a half-hour left to watch tonight or tomorrow, and I don't really care if I do or not.

Seriously, there was a half-hour of commercials before the movie. An eight minutes Blu-Ray commercial. Two video game commercials. One for some film group. Plus the usual handful of trailers. None of this could be skipped or advanced through, which made a two and a half hour movie that much longer.

I don't know why the movie didn't click for me, but I was bored with it from the first moments. I made myself sit through it, thinking it must get better, but other than the special effects I couldn't care less. (And, on a small screen, even those special effects weren't all that much.) I really don't know if I'll bother with the last half-hour, I feel like I already wasted two and a half hours of my life on this.

Edit: Okay, watched the ending. I liked it more than the rest of the film. Googling let me know that I wasn't alone in being uncertain if he was still dreaming or not when he got to see his kids, and I liked that. I also really liked how they brought the end of the film right back to the opening scene. The ending made me feel a little less like I wasted hours on this, but I still wish the film had been a whole lot shorter.

I liked it, mainly because I approached it as a heist movie and I LOVE heist movies. :) Cobb's drama with his dead wife got really old really fast, though.

Yeah, I think I would have liked it a whole lot more if I went into it thinking of it that way. Instead I went in thinking it was some Big Great Drama, that it had so many layers that no one could follow it or understand, that it was full of Important, Meaningful Messages, etc. (No one outright told me any of that, it's just the impression I picked up from LJ posts about the movie.)

And agreed. While I understand why the plot about the dead wife was important, it did nothing for me.

Huh. All through the movie dead wife's name bugged me. "Mal" meaning bad or evil, I kept hearing it that way instead of as a name, but I suppose she was named that purpose.

Exactly, the 'Mal' name was a REALLY ham-fisted way of letting us know the lady in Cobb's head was bad news. /head desk.

The ending had me going for about 5 minutes before I remembered it didn't matter. Not didn't matter in the way that "Oh it's just a movie, who cares" but didn't matter in the way that he got what he wanted in the end and he clearly didn't give a shit if he was still asleep, which if fine by me.

Yeah, which is interesting. Always nice when characters change from the beginning of a movie or book.

I found it boring, too. So boring, in fact, that I can't even be bothered to remember and elaborate any specific details. I just wanted to let you know that you're definitely not alone!

Thanks! I had heard so much positive stuff about it, I had thought it was just something odd about me being unable to like it...

Hah, I felt the same way about those commercials. We ended up just doing stuff around the house and checking back in the living room every once in a while.

I thought this would be a movie I would have to outright watch and not multitask during, so I was sure to finish everything I could before starting it. I shouldn't have bothered! I could have done it in that wasted half-hour. Blah.
