In the continuing Yogurt Saga, I found the recommended Fage brand, so I bought a couple. First one I'm trying is honey. For who knows what reason, I always think I don't like honey, then I taste it and go MMMMMMM.

Fage is the best Greek yogurt I've tried so far, but I can easily put my finger onto why: The calorie count is the same as that previous brand I had been eating, but you have less than half as much yogurt, so the extra calories go into the heaping helping of sweet stuff (honey, in this case) that you mix in.

It's really, really sweet, which of course is nice, but it feels even more like a dessert than the old Yoplait ones had. It's seriously sweet, candy-sweet. *checks label* Oh. Know why? 29 grams of sugar. Dessert-ish Yoplait had 14 grams. Wow. I'm going to finish this one, since it's all I have for breakfast, but if the other flavors have that much sugar I'm going to have to toss them out.

Holy cow. A Snickers bar has 30 grams of sugar. This yogurt has 29 grams. D: D: D: Why do I not read the labels better before buying these things?! (I did check the calories, but clearly I need to check more than that.)

So, whoever had recommended this brand in the previous yogurt posts: You liked it because you're basically eating a candy bar. D: (Sorry!)

On second thought, I think I'm not going to eat this. I only had a couple spoonfuls. I have a few almonds and an apple I can have instead. If I'm going to eat the sugar and nearly the calories of a candy bar, I'd rather just eat the darned candy.

Food should not be this complex. :/

Yeah, there's a reason we have all these good labeling laws for food (go government regulations!) Sometimes there's very little difference between "healthy" an normal variants, and sometimes it's worth it, and sometimes it's not.

Also, I've found 'reduced fat' is usually worth it, and 'zero fat' rarely is. You can barely tell the difference with reduced. Zero tastes like they surgically replaced the flavors you like with cardboard replicas.

Yeah, that's pretty much exactly how I feel about a lot of "reduced sodium" stuff. I think to myself, "Oh, this has so much less sodium in it! I'll just get that kind." And then I try it and... ugh. It's awful. It's like they sapped all the bloody flavor out of whatever it was and left you with ick. Yeah, it might half half the sodium in it, but that does me absolutely no good if I can't stand eating it, or I end up throwing salt on it anyway just to make it taste better, so screw that. I'll just cut back on salt in OTHER ways, and eat my normal-sodium tomato soup, thanks! It's not like I'm the kind of person who dumps salt on stuff anyway, so I'll deal with whatever comes in the stuff I buy.

Salt's the flavor, yep. The wonderful, wonderful flavor.

I love salt more than sweet. ...I could use something salty right now, ha!

Salt = the best. Forget about candy, I want some olives, feta cheese and pickled things!!!

Yes! And if left on my own, I'd happily salt everything! Alas I have to try not to. :/ Darned health!

I know, why does everything bad for you have to be so delicious :(

Yeah, I've found the same thing with zero fat stuff -- if it tastes so bad I don't want to eat it, then what's the point?

And yes! Yay good labeling laws! I was reading a blog post about how different they are in Japan (sometimes worthless, sometimes okay... you get to guess which one each time you pick up an item!).

I like the Fage brand that you had, but I buy the plain and do what I learned in this nutrition class I had to take when I was pregnant. I just put either fruit or granola in it.

Oooh, that's a good idea. Granola adds quite a few calories*, but I bet going with plain would be enough to make up for it.

*Or at least the granola they have for sale at the bulk shop I go to.

It's really good that way too, I am sure you can either 1) find a healthier granola or 2) just use a little bit. But yeah, go low fat plain and I think you should be fine. When people go on and on about how great Greek yogurt is for you I am sure they must mean the plain (and that's what the teacher in the nutrition class said too).

ANYWAYS what I suggest to do if you get the somewhat caloric granola, just sprinkle a light layer on as you eat so that you get some in every bite, and as long as you don't pile it on you'll be fine.

If it's not too much trouble to bring berries I suggest something small and mixable like blueberries or raspberries or maybe chopped banana or peach.

I'm making myself hungry for yogurt now, dammit xD.

I just discovered Trader Joe's Greek yogurt. I like it bunches (have tried plain and mixed berry). I am about to give Chobani, Dannon, and the local store brand vanillas a try. I was wary of the store brand because it has stevia and I'm dubious about all aftertaste-rich sweeteners. But I bought one just to see.

Chobani is the brand I'm going to stick with. I don't love it, but it's okay. (The pineapple flavor masks/works well with the yogurt's flavor).

I haven't been to Trader Joe's in ages, I should stop in so I can try theirs!

I discovered I am fond of topping the plain version with agave nectar. (So much for health-consciousness, yeah? ^_^ )

Tried the Chobani vanilla this week. Dannon still at the top of my list of vanillas; Chobani was just a little...off, for me. Can't describe, just didn't care for it.

Tried Trader Joe peach version; also yummy!

I love Fage unsweetened yogurt. It's very similar to what you'd get if you mixed yogurt and sour cream and then drained them in cheesecloth overnight: thick, rich, creamy, not too sour but with just a bit of a tang. It's so much thicker than normal yogurt that you have to eat it in much smaller servings, but I like it better that way anyway. And if you do want the sweet, you can always drizzle on honey yourself!

What I usually do instead, though, is just get plain generic yogurt and drain it myself-- very similar flavor, and so much cheaper.

Seems like plain/unsweetened is the way to go! Next time I go shopping, I'll pick up some.
