Anyone who uses Netflix, be sure to read any email/mail you get from them. If you have both DVD and streaming access, your membership cost will now nearly double.

Your current $9.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:

Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 1 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $7.99 a month

Your price for getting both of these plans will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99). You don't need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.

I've been forcing myself to watch a movie a week for so long to make the $10/month worth it (which even for one movie totally isn't), and so this gives me a darned good excuse to finally quit. I really don't know why I was forcing myself to stay.

Bye bye, movie of the week!

You may want to qualify your post. I think the 'double' thing may only be for the plan you have.

According to what I'm seeing on my account (I have 3 DVDS+Streaming), my price is only going up $4/month.

I can't get to the account page on Netflix anymore, but I believe it said 1 DVD at a time would be $8 ($7.99), 2 DVDs would be... I want to say it was $12, but I didn't check that part too closely since I only got one at a time. Streaming is going to be $8 ($7.99). So for just one disk at a time and streaming, it's going to be $16.

Based on the email alone (in my original post), the lowest price for streaming and one disk would be $16. I was playing $9.99 for everything before (which now I realized I was rounding down to $9 in my head), but still, that's $6 more, for just one DVD at a time. Were you paying less than $9.99 a month for streaming + three DVDs?

No, I was paying more than that, but my point was 'double' is a relative term based on one particular DVD+streaming option, when there is more than one option.

I'm arguing semantics, sorry.

Oh oops! Gotcha now. No worries. :)

Yeah, it's the people with the lowest tier plan who are getting hit with the biggest pay hike. Like [livejournal.com profile] tersa, we have 3-at-a-time DVDs plus unlimited streaming, and to keep both those options is going to be $4.00 more a month. We can (and will) ratchet down to the next option (2-at-a-time dvds + unlimited streaming) to keep the price the same. It's not going up, though, till September 1st, so at least there's that!

Sounds like you can get along without Netflix pretty well, so this is a great excuse to dump the service!

Sounds like a perfect way to "get around" the increase!

And yeah, I think it's more of a relief than anything. I really don't know why I forced myself to stick around with it so long.

My folks and I were talking about going for Netflix after our relocation to the new house, as a way to possibly save money on the cable bill (this was earlier amidst talk of switching to just a basic package on Dish or DirecTV, but we're keeping the same provider for both cable and internet. Good thing, considering that the one we have has MSNBC, Comedy Central, Teen Nick, Cartoon Network, and Logo TV, the latter of which I don't even think is on either of the satellites).

But yeah, that sucks about the Netflix thing, but then I think we were just going to go for DVDs only if we do it. If we do, it'll still be a lot better selection than any of the Red Box kiosks around town (the one at my store especially sucks donkey balls). And also, my mom kinda wants to get this, because they have a deal where she can get a whole lot of Farmville cash as an extra for signing up.

I dropped HBO when I got Netflix, but I think I'll be fine without either of them. I do still get all those "minor premium" channels, like Cartoon Network. I seem to watch those more than anything else.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you guys! And stuff like game money is just added bonus.

Like an 8-track tape, but thinner!

Exactly! Like a record dipped in rainbow.

I wouldn't dip anything in rainbows. They're spicy. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDxiW1FNsmc) =(

The library is your friend. I'm not even using the library I work at for the most part, I go to the public library. I actually just picked up a House DVD that I've been waiting like weeks on. D= I mean I know someone had to have been blocked from renewing, because I certainly have been a lot! Also, I just happened to find Megamind on the new movie display on my way in.

I'm assuming this is universal at all libraries, but typically you can order something to be put on hold for you so you can just walk in and pick it up. I know it's a little more out of the way than Netflix was, but it's free (As long as you return on time! Make sure you know their overdue policies!)

What I can't get at the library, I'm sure I can probably find a torrent somewhere. =D

Yeah, I'm going to lean on torrents, I think. But I do have a library card!

Date: 2011-07-13 01:02 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] achika-soladia.livejournal.com
And if you don't, library cards should be free for residents of the county it resides in. ;)

I think it was... or maybe some small fee like $2. It's been a while, I can't recall!
