I first heard of Terra Nova a couple months ago, and even before seeing the show, I knew I'd need dinosaur icons. This was the show I was most looking forward to seeing out of the whole fall season.

If you know nothing about it, it starts in the future. The Earth is dying, blah blah, a time rift is found and people go back to start new in a clean world, one filled with dinosaurs. Sounds pretty darned cool, huh? And it runs on a major network (Fox).

Someone on LJ described the show as Stargate: Dinosaurs, which wasn't totally inaccurate, other than the stargate was a one-way trip.

I expected to have to suspend some disbelief, and in the beginning of the show I was even willing to suspend a metric crapload of it (which is good, since that's how much unrealistic stuff there was). I mean, a show about going into the past to live with dinosaurs! How cool is that! Totally worth whatever setup is needed to get the main characters into place!

By the end of the show, I was already questioning if I'd be interested in more eps. The CGI was okay (and it needed to be outstanding). The storyline was god awful. I didn't care about any of the characters at all.

Did anyone else watch it? What did you think? (I feel like Thistle McGrumpyPants lately, I seem to hate all movies and TV!)

Edit: I know I'm *cough* kinda down on religious stuff *cough* sometimes, so I especially like this video. Er, not because it's down on anyone, but it explains things in a fun way! A nerd is a nerd is a nerd... Credit for link to [livejournal.com profile] veloxe!

It's okay, Thistle. We know how you really feel.

That video... it is 100% true. I never thought of it that way before!

I know! It's a little scary, quite interesting, and funny!

I watched the 2hr premiere of Terra Nova last night and while I'll probably watch some more of it, I wasn't like OMGMUSTWATCH. I do like Stephen Lang as the security chief though.

Part of the problem is that the setup is too forced. A cop and intelligent doctor decide to have an illegal third child in a world which is dying and badly overpopulated because "it seemed like a good idea at the time"? W. T. F.

I just hope that the writers don't make a habit of throwing the Idiot Ball around.

And even worse than that, the government just TRUSTS people to follow the rule? There's no forced (temporary) sterilization/birth control? I wish they had dropped that whole plotline, just that billboard that said "A family is four" would have been perfect, nice and subtle, let people notice that no family has more than two kids and let the viewer put the pieces together. Seeing three kids in the new world bugs me endlessly; they did in fact get rewarded for breaking the rules. (And I totally do not buy that they were able to sneak the kid through in a backpack.)

And I know kids do stupid things, but the whole teenager/going outside plotline made me froth. Doing stupid things is one thing, but exposing yourself to giant, flesh-eating dinosaurs is a whole different level of stupid.

Oh well. Hopefully it will get better.

That bugged me, too. I'd have believed the child was an accident, with a bit of chagrin and a statement of 'We couldn't bring ourselves to abort /our/ child so we risked having her in secret'.

Instead we get 'we just thought it was a good idea'. WTF was that?

The kids being outside perimeter gates was also :/ inducing. You mean they've been doing this all this time with no consequences up till now?

The premise intrigues me. I'm going to watch a few more eps and see if the script writers can get their act together and give us something with less cheese and more meat.

I might be giving the writers too much credit, but I hope "we just thought it was a good idea at the time" was a cover for something else. Maybe there's some related storyline that will come out.

Drinking around raptors. What could go wrong!

Hmm... granted I wasn't paying 100% attention because Moya was climbing all over me and making me read her new Elmo book three times but I assumed this: "we thought it was a good idea," given the personality type they were trying to push, was him being a smart ass.

After all, why give a real explanation to someone who not only doesn't need it but has also already (seemingly) decided not to like you?

Eh, that's on the actor then. He really didn't portray sarcasm to me at all. If he meant it to be sarcastic. I'm not all that convinced, but maybe Thistle is right. Their might be a story arc explaining things in the future.

Well, like I said, my attention was more than half divided. It's also partly that I hate to think someone was stupid enough to give that response. XD

But yeah, I agree, I think I'll try to catch a couple more episodes and see if the story improves before I make any judgements. :)

I was probably less disappointed because I expected it to suck ass. Therefore, it was actually slightly better than my expectations.

But yeah, going back to that particular time period... not so smart. I personally was wondering how they were going to explain not changing the future and had all these ideas of my own but oh, different time line. That was the most disappointing to me because it was the easiest cop out.

The rest... I'll give it a few more episodes to see how it works out. Maybe it will get better and if not... there's a lot of other stuff to watch.

And also. The son was stupid enough and annoying enough for me to want to strangle. Just sayin'.

But is it. There was that bit with all the writing on the rocks which lead to the scene about changing the future by controlling the past? I have no idea which of those we're supposed to believe...

Totally agreed, on the son. HOW DARE YOU GO TO PRISON, DAD. :|

Exactly. And that's the one reason I will watch a few more episodes to see if this all picks up. They did leave some interesting questions. It's all going to depend on how they handle those and how long they take doing it.

And yeah... amazingly stupid.

I think you are probably too smart to be watching Terra Nova...my 10 year old loves it. Dinosaurs! Kids in peril! Plot holes so big that even fifth graders can see them and feel smug! XD

Haaa! I'm glad he's spotting them, too! (And enjoying the show!)
