I suspect it's not a spoiler because we learn more about them early on, but there are actually different kinds of Un-Named. It's understandable that in an us-vs-them situation, the 'us' would think that all of the 'them' are all the same (bad/stupid/evil), but Bonechewer actually turns out to be as smart and and self-aware as any of the Named.
I recommend you give it a try! It's quite an enjoyable read. :)
