All my life, I've wanted to be able to run. As a very heavy person, running even a couple steps was a bad idea. But [livejournal.com profile] gonzostar does lots of running now, and instead of just admiring her for it, why can't I try it too? I still haven't gotten the app issue worked out yet, but I figured I could just try it some and see how it goes.

Odd thing #1: It doesn't hurt my knees. It doesn't hurt anything. It doesn't feel at all like running when I was 130+ pounds heavier. :P Duh on me!

Odd thing #2: And, unlike #1, this one really is odd. I don't seem to know how to run. You'd think we could just... run. It must be in our genes. I had to run a couple times for gym class in high school (decades ago), but I haven't run at all since then. I'm 100% sure I'm doing it wrong, as I only land on the balls of my feet and never put the rest of my foot down. Also, perhaps related to that issue, I seem to... bounce? too much. Like I'm not running smoothly, I think I must be going up and down more than other people when they run...

I watched some videos on Youtube, but unsurprisingly there are no "how to run" videos out there. I did learn it's rare to land on the balls of your feet instead of your heels, and that it's safer/better for you to land that way, so go me?

I didn't run for long though, because it just felt so wrong. I have no idea how to force my heels to drop down and touch the ground too, it feels natural to stay up on the balls of my feet if I'm running. I didn't run for long outside, because I worry I look like I'm running oddly, so I ran back and forth in my apartment (I have one long hallway that goes from one end of it to the other).

I have no idea how to figure out how to run right though...

Stardew Valley: I haven't been posting about it much. I'm back into winter again, which is just the worst season of them all. So boring. I'm trying to max out my mining and adventuring ratings (both 9 now), which means I have to keep going into the Skull Dungeon (which I really dislike, it's stressful to me for some reason, I guess maybe because the mobs are so much harder). I wonder if I could max out in the mines or if the XP there is just too low?

Finally, after having a baby for like three weeks, it woke up. I think we can all agree that Haken should not be permitted babies and/or needs some better way to paint the ceiling.

Stop throwing so hard! D:

And lastly, the perfect food for the next time you go to the strip club. Sexy snackfoods? (Work safe on that link? I think?)

When you walk, do you also only use your balls? I guess not? What if you try to start out with walking and then walk a little faster and faster, ... and try deliberatly NOT change how you use your feed?

I actually had to try it to see how I walk. :P I land heel first when I walk, so maybe your idea will work. I'll try it tomorrow! (I'm going to run on alternating days.)

Maybe that'll work, thanks. :)

Also, are you sure about there not being any "how to run" videos? Because I found plenty ...

Or do you mean something else and I misunderstood?

Yeah, I meant a more basic thing than the form. Thanks for the links though! I hadn't seen that third one yet, so I'm watching it now.

" I only land on the balls of my feet" - that's how I'm TRYING to run, it's a lot easier on the knees. I think you are doing it the right way.

I think it's the right way to start, but your heel should come down and touch the ground too. I just stay on the balls of my feet all the time.

*Haken* shouldn't have babies? Hmmm.

Ha! Yep. Though your Haken would have had nice pups, I'm sure. :)

Before we met, I had a WoW character named Haken, so reading your posts always gave me a moment of amused confusion. I really like the name, so I reuse it now and then.

it's safer/better for you to land that way, so go me?

I think I remember hearing it really is the better way!

Yep! I've been watching lots of videos since I made this post. Landing on the balls of your foot is much better for your body overall, so yay I at least have that much right!

There's actually this family of runners in South America, who are descended from the ancient Inca/Maya long distance runners. The people who took messages around, etc. There was a big tado about this group as they can run for insane distances, like hundreds of miles, and on the balls of their feet. :)

It's actually a good thing, so don't stress over it. :)

Since I can't seem to change it, I'll try to live with it. :P Sure would be nice if I could run for long distances!

That's funny - I tend to walk on the balls and run on the heels, unless I'm sprinting, then I also run on the balls. I tend to get shin splints more often (after) when I run on the ground, but running on the elliptical, though it's supposed to be better for the knees, seems to hurt my knees more (during, but not after).
What's the app you're using? My favourite running app is Zombies Run!

Right now, no app. Unfortunately apparently iphone 4s are too old to run the training apps I want to use. I love the idea of Zombies Run! and will eventually grab that one (if it will work in mine).

I started Zombies Run on the 4S, if that's anything to go by, but they've done a lot of updates, and I'm not sure they've upgraded it too much for the 4S to handle...

I'm kind of giving up on my phone. I'm getting a shared van ride to the airport for my trip, and I can't even install their app to track the van... It wouldn't surprise me if Zombies Run no longer would work on it. :(

I AM LAUGHING SUPER HARD AT HAKEN THROWING BABIES AT THE CEILING. I feel this could have been avoided by giving him specifics on how high one throws a baby.

Running: you learn to run the right way by just doing it. I know that sounds dismissive, but it is true. When I first started (god, like ten years ago), my dad always said "Wow, you are not a natural runner and it shows." Now he says, "I saw you come down through the chute like a gazelle." It's just doing it. Don't get TOO hung up on how you look or whether your form is good as long as nothing hurts.

I did find though that taking smaller steps helped me in the beginning. YAY RUNNING YOU KNOW I LOVE TALKING ABOUT RUNNING.

Amusing timing: I just found more Haken logs (in my gmail account, of all places!) so read a couple of them. Last one was Embersong doing tarot readings for Haken and Morn! Hahaah, we had such good RP then. :D

That makes sense on the running. I've been under the weather this week, but as soon as I'm better, I'm going to try more. EVEN IF I LOOK SILLY AS HECK PRANCING AROUND DOING IT!

*laughs so much* I could easily picture needing to tell Haken just how high you can toss a baby... Which would disappoint him since throwing one as high as he could would be more enjoyable.

Now that is weird, because I was actually thinking of Lu and her tarot cards this morning - not the readings themselves, but when Haken asked to see the cards after he had recovered from the reading, and he asked Lu if he destroyed the cards would it hurt, because he was thinking maybe they were to her like his runeblade was to him, and she said yes not because this was the case, but because they belonged to her grandmother and she would have been sad to lose them.

... it is also fortunate she could not have children, because while I would like her to be responsible, my first thought at her reaction to Haken being disappointed he couldn't throw a baby as high as possible would be, "... do you want to do that, because I have levitate, and I could TOTALLY levitate that baby," and then like, Morn would have seen them doing it and would have been like WHAT ARE YOU DOING STOP THAT IMMEDIATELY OH MY GOD and Lu would have been like what, HE likes it, the BABY likes it.

"NO."

I'm sitting here, trying not to laugh out loud at work as I picture that baby tossing scene. (Luckily no one can see me grinning like a madman!) I think Morn would have fallen over just at the idea of DKs being around a pure, innocent baby, let alone touching one!

I was looking for a screenshot earlier, and found these instead. Most amusing character commissions ever? :D
