I saw another review of this book somewhere, and it had exactly the same complaint- that the characters were flat, and especially that the captain's obesity was so frequently mentioned as an end to jokes. I don't understand why the kid was there, I can't imagine parents taking their kid to a space station? I'd read it for the rat viewpoint, but the rest of it sounds so awful I just don't want to.
