thistlechaserI've been googling and reading FAQs and guides all day, but there are a couple of FFXI things I haven't been able to find answers to. If you know the answer to one or more, please leave me a comment! Heck, even if you don't know, you can still comment! ;)
* Can you pause or scroll through the chat window? Sometimes I have to step AFK, and I worry I miss stuff.
* What the heck does RSE stand for? I think I've figured out most of the other abbreviations.
* Am I still low level enough (7) where monsters won't drop anything important? I'm worried I'll sell something that I need later. Does anyone know of a list of important items/things you shouldn't sell/things that might have use later? Things like earth crystals are really common, but I have gotten only one dark crystal, so I haven't wanted to sell it. I've gotten a couple of beast seals, and they don't seem sell-able at all.
* If I were to change jobs and become (say) a thief, I'd still be able to do my white magic? I guess I'd have to buy new weapons/armor? Is there any harm to doing this, other than slowing down my leveling up with my WHM? If I wanted to take thief as a subjob later, would taking it as a new job effect that?
* Why do people type like this? "I'm not all into FFXI, but my boi is, and i wanted to share these with u guys :) If ur on dial up, i'm sorry.."

Uh... I have no clue. It's been a long time. Most movies suck.

Date: 2004-04-05 02:57 pm (UTC)* RSE = Race Specific Armor, which you can get through a series of quests at around 30th level. It's designed to address shortcomings in a race; Elvaan get more MP from it, Taru get more HP, and so forth. As Humes, we get... a mixed bag of stuff from it.
* Anything you have that can be sold, you can sell in the Auction House. You may want to check Allakhazam (ffxi.allakhazam.com) to see if the item is used in a quest which might pay better than selling, but other than that, it's all just a source of cash to you right now.
Beastman seals are an exception: they're a kind of 'currency' you use to buy your way into hard boss fights, called 'Burning Circle fights'. You should just toss them into a stack in your mog safe, and forget about them. Later, you will be happy you kept them.
The kind of crystals you get depends on the monster. Forest Funguars are dark-aligned; if you want more dark crystals, kill more of them. Orcs and Goblins are fire, Bats are wind, and most of the rest of the stuff in Ronfaure is Earth.
* If you change jobs to thief, you won't be able to do white magic while you're a thief. You'll be a level one thief, with only the abilities a level 1 thief has. There is no harm in doing it; in fact, you should play around with the different jobs some, since they all play somewhat differently past 5th level or so.
When you have the ability to equip a subjob, the level of your subjob will be based on two things: your main job's level -- the sub will be limited to half the main job -- and the level you've gotten to playing the sub as a main job.
So, let's say you're WHM18 and just got the subjob ability. If you've played THF up to 5th level, and you set it as your sub, you'll be WHM18/THF5. If, however, you've played THF to 15th, and you set it as your sub, you'll be WHM18/THF9. So it's in your interests to play other jobs, particularly other jobs that make good subs for your intended main job. This is why I've played Monk to 17; I don't care about Monk, really, but it's a great sub for my Warrior 35 job.
(Oh, the 'accepted' normal sub for WHM is BLM, at least until 30th level. If you're thinking of sticking with WHM, you may want to play around with BLM a little; you'll be wanting to play it to 10th around the same time you get WHM to 18th.)

At low levels, you can solo. You fight mobs, you get XP, and you get crystals and drops from them. These make money when you sell them.
At higher levels, you group. You get less drops, as they're split among your group. You can kill lower level mobs for their drops but you only get crystals from mobs that generate XP. This is called 'farming'.
If you were a melee class, you would be investing your money into equipment. When you moved on to a new set of equipment, you would sell your old equipment and recoup much or all of your original costs.
Magical classes, alas, have to pay for spells. No reselling there.
Anyhow, it's quite possible for a low level character (15th and lower) to have more money than they know what to spend it on (if they don't pick up any moneysucking hobbies). After that, you start needing to farm or garden or fish or mine or log to make money.
This is because there are rabbits you can kill at 30th level too... and they drop rabbit skins. Sometimes. And earth crystals. So... the same drops, but stuff does get more expensive as you get higher in level.
The easiest way to make money and feel productive is to switch to a new job and level it up to 10 or so.
There are a few complicated ways to make potentially lots of money in the later game but those center around those beastman seals. So keep 'em. :-)
