Some questions for you, some questions for me

I've been googling and reading FAQs and guides all day, but there are a couple of FFXI things I haven't been able to find answers to. If you know the answer to one or more, please leave me a comment! Heck, even if you don't know, you can still comment! ;)

* Can you pause or scroll through the chat window? Sometimes I have to step AFK, and I worry I miss stuff.

* What the heck does RSE stand for? I think I've figured out most of the other abbreviations.

* Am I still low level enough (7) where monsters won't drop anything important? I'm worried I'll sell something that I need later. Does anyone know of a list of important items/things you shouldn't sell/things that might have use later? Things like earth crystals are really common, but I have gotten only one dark crystal, so I haven't wanted to sell it. I've gotten a couple of beast seals, and they don't seem sell-able at all.

* If I were to change jobs and become (say) a thief, I'd still be able to do my white magic? I guess I'd have to buy new weapons/armor? Is there any harm to doing this, other than slowing down my leveling up with my WHM? If I wanted to take thief as a subjob later, would taking it as a new job effect that?

* Why do people type like this? "I'm not all into FFXI, but my boi is, and i wanted to share these with u guys :) If ur on dial up, i'm sorry.."

On my cube walls: Lots of hangy foam fake snow, five silver Christmas balls, work papers, info, and notes, a clean whiteboard, and a cat calendar.

On found_objects, some idiot posted a picture of a dead animal with its guts hanging out.

Uh... I have no clue. It's been a long time. Most movies suck.

A letter of resignation to give to my boss? ;) And lots of cats. Oh, and the best gaming computer ever!

My cat comes running to the door, meowing at the top of her lungs, when I get home.

Oh, uh... I'd make more relationships be accepted. Same sex, human/lamp, car/plush toy, whatever.

Yes. One thing that may not be in the FAQs is that you make most of your money at low levels.

Well, not quite true, but true enough. I shall explain.

At low levels, you can solo. You fight mobs, you get XP, and you get crystals and drops from them. These make money when you sell them.

At higher levels, you group. You get less drops, as they're split among your group. You can kill lower level mobs for their drops but you only get crystals from mobs that generate XP. This is called 'farming'.

If you were a melee class, you would be investing your money into equipment. When you moved on to a new set of equipment, you would sell your old equipment and recoup much or all of your original costs.

Magical classes, alas, have to pay for spells. No reselling there.

Anyhow, it's quite possible for a low level character (15th and lower) to have more money than they know what to spend it on (if they don't pick up any moneysucking hobbies). After that, you start needing to farm or garden or fish or mine or log to make money.

This is because there are rabbits you can kill at 30th level too... and they drop rabbit skins. Sometimes. And earth crystals. So... the same drops, but stuff does get more expensive as you get higher in level.

The easiest way to make money and feel productive is to switch to a new job and level it up to 10 or so.

There are a few complicated ways to make potentially lots of money in the later game but those center around those beastman seals. So keep 'em. :-)

Wow, there's just so much to know! I feel so new! ;)

I can't believe how much there is to look forward to doing! And so so so many things I want to try! (I can't even count how many times today I've considered quitting my job just so I can play more. Heh.)
