The setting: Song of Ice and Fire. Daenerys (who was actually Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica) was moving her people from one of those southern cities to another.

I was some kind of healer who used herbs (from WoW?) and I just poof! appear in that world. Tall grasslands, the train of her people going by. I got put into a small group of other medical people, a doctor (from Star Trek, but he wore a white lab coat) and another healer with herbs from some other theme. A young psychic girl was also with us, but I can't remember what show/movie/book she was from (she'd get visions at random, thus she tended to scream at random).

Suddenly Scourge. WoW's Scourge attacked us, and my section of the train got pinned down in a little village that looked like something hobbits would live in. Us healers got stuck in some tiny building (below the surface), and "luckily" two people died against the outside of the door so we were somewhat out of reach. The other herb-healer got pulled through the little bit the door could open and the psychic girl did as well. I don't know what happened to the Star Trek doctor guy, but I was alone in this underground room, outside I could hear all the screams of people dying to the Scourge.

Then the door started moving, someone forced their way in. I figured I was dead at this point, but it was Starbuck. She had a mouthful of broken teeth, so she grabbed a handful of salt and started chewing it (to fight infection?).

I woke up at that point, unfortunately. Clever brain, Starbuck as Daenerys would have fixed so many of Dance with Dragon's issues! It really was a cool dream though, even things like the grasslands and the Hobbit village were just downright cool.

This is pretty darned cool (and it's surprisingly nice to hear the music again!). How all the effects were added into the GoT series:

The dragons were especially cool!

I'm about 80% through Dance with Dragons. I was going to wait until the end to post this, but since I'm posting the video I'll write this up as well.

The second half of the book is a whole lot better than the first, but I finally put my finger on what bugs me in this book...

Mild spoiler: one (large but vague) plot point mentioned )

Anyway, other than that, I'm enjoying it a lot more than I had in the first half.

Unrelated: I wish auto-complete still worked on tags, that used to be so handy.

Best. Summer. Ever. July, nearly noon:

Sitting by an open window to read and it's actually almost too cold! It's been like this for two weeks now, and weather.com tells me for the next ten days our highs won't get out of the 70s.

We've had only one hot period so far this summer. It'd be more than perfectly fine with me if it were our only one.

Back to reading! A Dance with Dragons is starting to pick up a bit. 18% in. (Page numbers don't translate between ebook and physical one.)

Folks who are reading A Dance with Dragons, what are you thinking so far? I'm not looking for spoilers, just like it/don't like it? Are you hooked?

I don't know if it's me or not, but I'm having a really hard time getting into it and I'm certainly not hooked yet. I've read about 10% so far. I don't dislike it, but I have no great drive to read it either. "Meh" sums up my feelings so far.

I don't think it's because my expectations were too high, though I do suspect it's something wrong with me personally and not the book. I'd much rather experience this through the show instead of reading -- one hour once a week and see lots of stuff happening vs slowly reading every day and so little happening. I think my attention span has shrunk to a new low, blah.

Hello, my lovely friends list!

I know many of us got our hot little hands on A Dance with Dragons today, and I know most of you probably know this already, but please please please be sure to put spoilers behind a cut! Some of us (like me) are going to be reading mighty slowly, and I'd really rather not be spoiled more than I already am. (A mainstream review spoiled the ending without a warning of any kind, ARG!!)

On a related note, something in the first few pages of the prologue had me grinning from ear to ear. I'm sure people will know it when they spot it! Vague reference to a minor, throw-away detail )
