I visited the Bad Baby Names site (a collection of quotes from a board about naming your new baby) thinking it would be funny, but instead it's just so so painful and cringe-worthy. I worry about people with this little sense having babies.

Have three examples:

What is a nature realated name for a boy? I am pregnant with a boy and I already have four girls. My girls are Summer Skies, Autumn Night, April Shower, and Spring Flower. Please help I am due in November.

I am not pregnant yet but thinking about names...I just thought of the name Lourdes Solange. This baby will be 75% latina and 15% european :)

Which name do you think?
Brecklyn Kate
OR
Ridgely Mae
I'm torn between the 2.

I'm half laughing, half just... shaking my head. Alex and I had a conversation about this just the other day. I find it amusing that people have this desire to give their kids a "unique" and "special" name, without thinking about what it's going to be like for the poor kid growing up saddled with such a monstrosity.

Heck, we even talked about those snap judgements people tend to make based on just names. A name tends to reflect back on your parents, which in turn says something about you because... well, you were raised by them. This statement may or may not be true, but let's face it, who doesn't process it like this in their heads without really meaning to? If I met a kid with a name like "Brecklyn" I'd be hard pressed not to think their parents are flipping retards and that they might be a wee bit off themselves...

There was a post of some mother DEFENDING THIS IDEA IN ALL CAPS, how "original" names are the new normal, so no one will give a second look to "Heraeanna Goldensun Landolakes" in the future.

Totally agreed. At best, these poor kids are going to have to pay for a name change. (Amusing story: My father was a bad person, so my sister decided to pay to get her last name changed to something else. A couple months later... she got married. Total waste of money!)

Which is funny, since I've been noticing an influx in "old-fashioned" names lately. Things like Emma and Olivia are coming back, it seems. Which I'm all for, frankly. Nothing wrong with names like that, they manage to be "original" without being... unpronounceable. Or something out of a bad teenage fantasy novel.

P.S. I started reading this site. As cringe-worthy as it is, it's totally the laugh I needed today.

Good! I'm glad it's amusing you. I think I'm just in a bad mood, so it's making me more grumpy instead of having the opposite effect.

Emma is such a pretty name! I'm with you, I like "old-fashioned" names spelled correctly.

I could see a future president or first lady with the name Emma. " kaesyn paige,(jason w/ a "k") " ? Not in a million years.

I take that back. I've started snickering at these.

"I love the Lord, am a LDS woman, and would like to name my baby Baby Jesus."

Haha, yes. Some of them I can't help but wonder if they're trolls or something... I can't quite believe they're real.

"My last name is Tinkletop. For some reason my wife objects to naming our son Timothy, Timmy for short. I think it's a good, memorable name."

Um.

Now see, I love nature names so I think some of those are awesome.

Then again my favorite name is Briar.

Date: 2011-04-20 07:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com
Oh, Briar is pretty!

I'd be fine with nature names, but not so much April Showers type names (which, by the way, totally sounds like a porn star name).

I agree! I like the name Briar, and I think Autumn is pretty too. But there's a point where it just gets silly.

There was a girl I went to school with named Ambyr Skye Goodwater. I like the name Amber, and I'm okay with the name Skye, but tack it all together with her last name and it was a little... um... odd. But then again, her parents were rather... unusual...

Amber? Yes?
Ambyr? Ugh, no.

Amber + Sky, Moon, Flower, Season, anything like that? No.

However, Amber Goodwater is really pretty.

Before Twilight became popular, my wife's daughter had her first kid.

Initially, she wanted to name her daughter "Bella Donna". She couldn't see how that would possibly get her daughter teased all through school, but eventually backed down after the, "Look, save the cutesy, clever names for a cat or dog or other pet, this is a PERSON you're naming."

She still liked Bella, which is a perfectly okay name (or was before Twilight), and went with Bella but dropped Donna as the middle name.

Now?

Now she wishes she hadn't.

In her own words, "I don't even fucking LIKE Twilight and EVERYONE asks me if IN named her after that stupid book!"

Hindsight...:D

Ha! Poor her, and poor everyone with that name. Another reason to dislike Twilight: Ruining an otherwise lovely name.

At the last call center I worked in, one of the contacts at a clinic was named Bellatrix.

She wasn't a Harry Potter fan, was in her 60s, and was not amused at peoples' reaction to her name.

And she went by Bellatrix, not Bella.

Wow, that's a name with character! (And not because of the HP connections.) I couldn't see naming a kid/pet that myself, but I do like the name.

From: [identity profile] bricriu.livejournal.com
She was actually from Hungary, if I recall.
I can also see where she'd get VERY tired of everyone calling or coming into the clinic asking her if she liked Harry Potter.

A few years back, we had a group of mice as pets.

YES! I was thinking that as well. Some of them would make great RP character names! But real life people names? No. :/

I worked with a woman named "Gay". Not even Gayle, just Gay. She worked the front desk in a HIGH SCHOOL office...oooh yeah, lots and lots of inane juvenile jokes. Apparently Gay was a perfectly fine woman's name back in the day.

I named my son what I thought was a perfectly normal, if slightly uncommon name. Unfortunately a popular TV star named their kid the same thing right about the same time, and now it is a "trendy" name that people seem to associate with being snooty spoiled rich kid...sigh.

Back in High School my bassoon instructor's name was Gay.

That was her full first name.

There used to be a man who lived here who had a name that, when I was 9, was the funniest thing ever.

Gaylord Fagerland.

I'm not even joking. That's how he was listed in the phone book.

Oh, that poor poor man. 'Gaylord' used to be an insult, back when I was young! I personally had no idea what it meant though, don't know about the other kids.

I seem to recall that Gay used to be a name... I guess that makes sense, since it originally only meant 'happy'. And poor woman! Only worse place to work with a name like that would be a prison...

Ugh! Bad luck with your son's name!

Yup, some of the older names are now quite out of fashion...like "Laurie" being a boy's name back around the turn of the century.

I had to take a quick look at that web site. Yikes. The poor children.

Um...I'm not sure if someone already brought this up and math isn't my strong suit, but how do you get to be 15% European? For that matter, how do you get to be 15% of anything?

I am torn between Brecklyn Kate and Ridgely Mae as well. Which one is worse?

Not to mention... "This baby will be 75% latina and 15% european" There's 10% of that baby missing!

Brecklyn looks worse to me. Looks like Becky went to Brooklyn and had a baby!

Half of those names only have 1 of 2 career paths. 1, stripper. 2, porn star. Although I'd be rolling if April Showers happened to be friends with May Flowers. I can imagine the line now: "Hey April Showers, call up May Flowers and bring her here!" priceless.

My rule of thumb has generally been that the middle name(s) are for being creative and such. If you want to name your kid some made up shit like Hergalbergal or something, use that as a middle name and just call him Dave or something.

Also, Twilight destroyed one of my great child names from my imaginary future kid. I was going to name him New, so his full name would be New Moon. But NOOOOOOO Twilight had to go fuck that one up.

You so silly!

But seriously, I've always loved the name Jacob. Luckily it's normal enough that I think it would be safe from Twilight associations!

Totally that, yes.
