The Reunion (Animorphs #30) by "K. A. Applegate" (Elise Donner)
Traditional or self-published: Traditional
Rating: Loved (Hated-Disliked-Okay-Liked-Loved)

With the exception of one large, completely unbelievable scene, this was one good book.

The series took a turn towards darker, which is pretty impressive based on how dark it had already been.

The narrator of this one is Marco, who is the comic relief character. I find I'm liking his books best of all, since somehow they're the darkest, most serious ones. I have no idea how that works.

Marco's mother not just has a Yeerk (alien brain slug) in her head, she has the Yeerk who is one of the highest leaders of their military. In this book, Marco set out to kill her. To kill his mother and the alien in her head.

It's so odd (and disturbing) that the Animorphs are so young. The fact that they can not just think about this kind of thing, but do it:

We hurt the innocent in order to stop the evil.

And:

Though I had not seen them except in my imagination, the singed, heat-cracked bones of my friends.

The whole plot was the setup and playing out of the plan to kill her, which is a little unusual for these books. Usually there's an A Plot and a B Plot.

For the first time in the series, I had slashy thoughts. It's probably because the kids are so young that I don't really see the series as slashy at all.

Jake has changed a lot over the months we've been fighting this little war. The look he gave me did not come from my boy Jake, my bud, my pal. It came from a battle commander.

Freaky seeing how old Jake has gotten.

"Marco, you're my best friend. But if you ever go off like that again you and I will have serious problems."

In the old days I'd have said "Bite me," or something equally brilliant.

Now I said, "Okay, understood."

It was all I could do to stop myself from saying, "Yes, sir."

The one completely unbelievable scene was that Marco morphed into a fly in the middle of a packed elevator. Morphing is a slow, ugly transformation, and somehow he hid the whole thing by holding a newspaper up before him. There were 15 adults in the elevator with him, and no one saw what was happening... But other than that scene, I completely enjoyed this book.
