The Ghost Dragon's Daughter by Beth Bernobich (pen name Claire O'Dell). This novella was set in what I thought was her book series (but instead turned out to be just one book). I've never read a short story or novella set in a series that worked as a stand-alone story, but this one really did.
Set in a version of China(?) where magic and technology mix, the story followed a trio of girls in some kind of school for magical-technology "engineers". The three were working on their final project that would let them graduate, but while they worked we learned all about the really interesting world they lived in.
The book this story is set in was published 12 years ago, Fox and Phoenix. That book is marked as Long City #1, but as far as I can find, there has never been another book (though the author did write other books since then). I got a copy of Fox and Phoenix before I started writing this review.
DNF #14: The Dragon's Empire by J.D. Wilde. Typical bad self-published book. I kept stumbling over sentences, having to reread to figure out what the author was trying to say. DNFed after two or three pages.
