District 9
Feb. 22nd, 2010 12:31 pmWow. A few months ago someone recommended District 9 to me. I wish I could remember who, so I could thank them! What a cool, satisfyingly dark movie!
On one hand, I wish the aliens had looked better (I've been spoiled by blue cat people), but on the other, having them be so ugly and alien really did work.
I had expected a darker ending. Sure it was far from a happy ending, but it was just as far from a hopeless one. (And how disturbing is it that as the movie ended I was hoping the aliens would return and kick Earth's ass?)
I really totally love that the movie took place over a non-American city. As the beginning of the movie referenced, alien ships always seem to pick New York City or Washington DC to hover over. Johannesburg worked really, really well, plus it was interestingly exotic.
So, all in all, two big big thumbs up for District 9. I'm suspecting it didn't do too well in the theaters? Either way, I enjoyed every moment in it.
