Man, my new phone is nice. Siri alone is AMAZING. It's like living in a scifi world! The screen isn't as much bigger as I thought it would be, and the whole phone is so darned thin I'm paranoid to even touch it in fear of breaking it, but all in all, I love it. My new case for it should arrive tomorrow, which will make it a lot easier and safer to hold.

I don't know how people get comfortable using their phones without a case... I use Otterbox cases, which are big and clunky protection. Apparently you can drop them off a roof or let it get run over and the phone would still be okay.

It took me quite a while to get the phone activated, and all my stuff from my old phone didn't get copied over, but I got my photos and important stuff downloaded to my computer, so that's good enough.

Once I had everything ready, I downloaded Pokemon Go. Happily there have been a bunch of pokemon that show up on my desk, so I don't even have to go anywhere to grab them. (I think the game does that, starts out giving a bunch around you? I heard that happened to other people when they started as well.)

I hate you, Venomoth. I spent more than half of my pokeballs on you, even though you had a green circle.

A game on one screen, a game on the other, and a game in front of them both. Clearly I am a responsible adult.

Eventually (soon) I'm going to have to find one of those pokestops, so I can get more balls. I'm down to 17.

At this point I'm more amused by the technology of the game than the game itself, but we'll see if it hooks me.

Oh, and the $56 tax on a $199 phone? It was correct. They have to tax you on the value of the phone, not the price they're giving it to you when you sign up for a contract. Boo. So with taxes and activation fee, that was $100 more on the $200 phone. Not as much of a sale as I would have liked. Still, my bonus this year covers the cost (plus more), so good enough. It was getting to be a necessary purchase.

I had planned my next game (still Fire Red) to be done with a team of rattata, but at the last moment I went with a team of mew instead. (Mew? Mews? Muii?) On my previous game I used ugly mewtwo instead of mew, and kicked myself the whole time for not using the cuter mew over the better stats of mewtwo.

Problem is, I forgot something: Mew is treated like a traded pokemon, so above X level you need a badge or he doesn't obey. When I hit level 11, he stopped listening. He's a psychic type who knows only pound and transform, so it's a 50/50 chance on using a useful attack... if he attacks at all and doesn't just sit there.

Brock's gym has only two pokemon, but it's geodude (level 12) and onix (14). I currently have two level 11 mews, one 9, one 8, and two 5s. If I get the rest up to level 9 I still don't think that'll be enough... a normal pound attack against two higher level rock pokemon? I could just level them all to as high level as possible and hope enough attacks get through to do some good, but that seems painful and not too likely to success.

I could cheat and put TMs on the mews, but I had wanted to do this with as little game-effecting cheating as possible (no stats increases, no rare candy, etc, but I did give myself a bike off the bat).

I had expected using cheats to make the game a whole lot less fun, but at the moment it's actually kinda better.

I used the one that makes all wild pokemon turn into (whatever one you want) and made myself a dozen master balls. So my team currently is:

Charizard (level 8), Dragonite (5), Mew (8), Gyarados (7), Jolteon (8), and Houndoom (7).

They don't have extra moves or HP or anything, only their looks are different. So, for example, Gyarados knows only Thrash, nothing else. Mew knows only Pound. (I actually have a MewTwo in the computer, I thought its moves might be better, but Mew is pretty darned cute so I might stick with him.)

The downside to this hack is one I experienced before: Once you use it, you seem to not be able to go back to random wild pokemon encounters. Turns out that's kinda not so bad. I leave one type for a while, then switch it to something else. I started with only encountering Magikarp, but that quickly got boring (since it only knows Splash), so I switched it to Clefable and then to Pidgeot. (All the trainers you encounter still have their expected pokemon, so you still need to deal with type issues.)

I'm highly tempted to give myself TMs of the moves I want the pokemon to have (and the held items too), but that'd make it too easy I think, I'll just let them grow into them.

Edit: I might be wrong about there being no difference in my team except for how they look. Mew soloed Brock's Onix and got three and a half levels of exp. That can't be right!

Playing on a rom has one downside: Once you finish the Elite Four, that's it. No way to play further, no way to access the Unknown Dungeon. Blah. There's not much playtime left after the Four, but I still would have liked it.

When you skip no trainers and fight every battle you can, there's not much challenge at the end.

My party ended up as:
Gyarados (48), Kadabra (44), Raticate (44), Charizard (47), Haunter (43), Zapdos (63).

Zapdos, who got all seven of my Rare Candies before I started the Four, began as level 61. He one-shot most everything. Some of my pokemon (Charizard, Haunter, Raticate) were never even called out (except I sacrificed Haunter once so I could use an item without losing an attack turn).

I wish the game has lasted longer! I might replay it using all the hacks/cheats I resisted the first time.

I was really, really sick during the night (stomach issues, blech), so I knew I wasn't going to be exercising this morning. Sorry, not going to do it when I got just a couple hours of broken sleep and still feeling sick. This made me a little excited as I could hop onto WoW and get my dailies and stuff done before work.

Sat down, tried to log on, failed. Peered at the authenticator, tilted it this way and that. (The housing is slightly off, it's hard to tell if the first number is a 9, 8, or 5.) I was sure I had the number right, and I haven't changed my password, so why wasn't it workin-- wait, what's that text on the side? Oh darned, it's Tuesday.

More than a year of playing, and Tuesday downtimes still take me by surprise!

In Pokemon news, Fire Red is MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH better! Oh my god, I have such a nice, sane team!

Charmeleon: My starter. I like Charizard, so I'll probably keep him for the long run. (Can you believe I have to google these names to make sure I'm spelling them right? Ha!)
Rattata: I usually keep one on my team the whole time, but he keeps falling behind in level, so I might replace him.
Spearow: Yay! Will become my pokemon to fly on.
Pikachu: Back in the old days, I never really liked pikachu much. Currently I'm overjoyed by him! I guess lack of exposure to cartoon Ash means I no longer associate pikachu with him.
Abra: WOO! Okay, I had to cheat a little to get him (with the emulator, you can save at any point, so I saved after encountering him and just kept chucking pokeballs and resetting when it failed), but I would have stuck around and kept trying over and over anyway, so mostly I just saved myself time and stress, so I'm okay with that. I got him on the third ball thrown too! Just a little depressing that he won't ever make the final evolution since I can't trade.

The last slot will be for Magikarp, and maybe I'll replace Rattata with a Gastly when I find one.

Really though, Red is SO MUCH FUN. Every time I encounter a pokemon I'm like "Hey! A paras! I remember you!" and "Ekans! Snake spelled backwards! How did I ever forget you!".

It's funny the memories these bring back, too. I saw a shellder and immediately thought of the McDonald's toy. I had so many of them! And I still owe them to [livejournal.com profile] hamburger. If I ever find the box of them, I'll play with them send them along.

(Edit: I hadn't realized my image in my last post was so big! Sorry! Images never display accurately on my home PC, so I don't see their true size until I see the post on my work machine.)

I wanna be the very best... but I just don't like any of these pokemon.

For the first time in many years, I'm replaying a Pokemon game. Emerald (picked at random, if I had seen a Red or Blue rom I would have snatched that up instead). I'm having the same issue I have whenever I played any non-Red/Blue game: My team is tiny because I don't like any of the new pokemon.

I'm in my third gym, and I have a grand total of three pokemon.

Sableye. Dark/ghost. My first time ever using it, and I love it.
Swellow. Normal/flying. Meh. I'd much much rather have a Spearow/Fearow, but I'm going to need a flying and this is the only one I saw.
Wartortle. Water. My starter. If I had found anything I liked better, I would have replaced it.

I also have a poochyena, but it's level 15 and all the others are around 23. It was going to be my dark pokemon, until I tried the sableye. I also have some level 6 bug pokemon, just as a HM user.

I've been doing fine with just three so far, except this gym is electric. Water pokemon. Flying. Against electric. Worse yet, all the electric types must have some secondary type because sableye's ghost moves aren't effective (or ghost is weak to electric, I totally don't remember these things anymore).

I saw an abra once, but I had forgotten how to catch them and didn't Google it, so I wasted my try by attempting to fight it. (How can I have forgotten so much? But on the other hand, I think that's why I'm enjoying the game now. It's all new!)

I really should have found a Red or Blue rom, then I'd have a team of six and wouldn't have this issue.

Oh well, back to walking through the grass for me!

Edit: Oops, ha ha. I decided to try to find a cheat so I could use the pokemon I wanted. (Not changing levels or power or number of pokeballs or anything else.) Somehow it glitched my game so I encounter nothing but charmander in the wild! No other wild pokemon ever. Guess I'll find a Red or Blue and start over.
