I'm a technical writer, and I've inherited a set of documents I have to maintain. Someone else created them, someone else named them. One of the file names is anal_timing. It's about timing analyst, so there's plausible deniability on the name, but every time I have to refer to them to someone else, I'm embarrassed. However, as long-time readers of my LJ know, my humor is kind of out of wack -- if someone brought me a file named anal_timing, I'd have a hard time not snickering out loud. My brain would SO go to the adult meaning first. But would other people?

So help me, friends list! What do you think about having a file at work named anal_timing? While the name could be seen as fitting, there are many other, not-potentially-offensive names that would fit too.

A question for my friends list!

I've always just bought my contacts from my optometrist, partly to help support their office, but mostly because I was too darned lazy to go through the work of getting them elsewhere.

This year, in about a week, I'm going in for my checkup, and this time I'd like to go the cheaper route for getting my new ones.

Does anyone order them online? Or somewhere not-from-doctor's-office? I heard Costco has good (the best?) prices, but I don't have a membership there.

If you order them online, is it a pain? Based on the reading I've done, you pay the full thing out of pocket, then submit the invoice to your insurance.

---

Edit: Wow, Inside Out is such a sweet movie! I hadn't been interested in seeing it for the longest time (a movie about emotions? in someone's head? really?), but it totally worked! I liked seeing the emotions in the adults' heads best, how different it was from the kid's. (The clips over the closing credits were some of the best parts!) But the very bestest part? ExpandTiny spoiler. )

If you haven't seen it yet, very much recommended!

In the last two months, I've been getting a foreign transaction fee on my credit card. Only 40 cents, but still. The only thing that get charged on that card are Netflix and one other monthly fee. I contacted the credit card company (Chase), and they told me:

"The merchant location for Netflix.com is registered at Luxembourg."

Huh? Netflix's HQ is in California.

Is anyone else seeing a fee like that? I've had a membership with Netflix for a long time now, and the fee only started showing up last month...

Google isn't telling me much. Anyone have any idea about this? I was worried this was a test of my card (when people steal numbers, they do small charges first to see if someone notices), but it's listed as "foreign transaction fee".

Two totally different topics, advice needed on both.

1) I love Chinese spareribs. They were my favorite food as a kid, I ate them as often as my parents would let me. However it's been years since I've had them as an adult since it's just silly how expensive they are. I stumbled upon this recipe today, and wow that looks easy. I don't know if I could find St. Louis-style pork ribs, but I'm sure I could substitute some other pork rib. Could they be that easy and be like the kind you get in a restaurant?

2) This is a sad one. When the Loki comic book first came out (three months ago), I ventured into the comic book store to get a copy. The staff was really nice and helpful, and they now reserve a copy for me each month. However, I find I'm just not enjoying the comic anymore -- I don't like the storyline, the price is too high, and I don't like getting just a tiny bit of the story once a month. However, I really, really don't want to go tell them face to face to stop holding a copy for me. I looked for an email address, but there isn't one (heck, oddly there's no website at all for the store). Think it would be horribly rude of me to just not go get it? They have my phone number, so I suppose they'll call me and remind me they have it, but it's just that they're really nice and I'd like to support their store, but I just don't want the comic anymore. (And yeah, them being really nice should make it easy to tell them I don't want it anymore, but I hate to disappoint them, and I know they wouldn't get angry at me or anything, but I just don't want to do it in person.)

I suppose maybe I could find a phone number and call them to tell them not to. Maybe that might be a good compromise...

This morning someone linked me to an image, and I noticed that it had a really odd background (the area of the window outside of the image itself, but within Firefox's view area).

Today I took a screenshot for someone else, uploaded it, and noticed the "blank"/black part outside the screenshot looked very odd in the same way. See: Strange background.

The image in the middle looks just as it should, but the screen to either side of it should be plain black.

Happens in IE and Firefox both, happens on both monitors (hooked up to the same computer).

Darned laptop is only two years old. Looking on the Amazon page I bought it from, the only warranty I see mentioned is "This laptop is backed by a 1-year limited hardware warranty.", so that does me no good.

It has been running hot lately, even though I blew the dust out of it last night or the night before. I don't know which number "counts", but these are the readings I get from my monitor at this moment:

GPU: 76C
HD0: 50C
Core0: 95C
Core1: 86C
(Edit: After rebooting, with no MMO running, the temps are 45C, 53C, 60C, 30C respectively.)

I have no idea how there could there be a 45 degree difference in temperature within a laptop...

How much trouble am I in? I know nothing about hardware. :/

Edit 2: Rebooting seems to have fixed the issue. Would this kind of thing come and go?

This was going to be a post about my taxes. Weeks, months!, of stressing out about doing them, and it took me maybe 20 minutes total to get them done. My taxes are simple and straightforward because my life is simple... which made me think of a quote.

There was a simple man who had a simple wife (something something) had a simple life.

My mother used to say it (sing it?) all the time, but I can't remember the middle something something. Oddly, Google has no hits at all for it, so maybe it was something she made up. Does it sound familiar to anyone?

Anyway, taxes came out better than usual this year. Usually I owe both state and federal. This year I owe $123 federal and get back $218 from state. Mostly I'm just happy to have it done!

Sadly I'm going to have to invest in a magnifying glass. Some of the numbers I had to input from the forms were so tiny I could hardly read them. My poor eyes are getting old.

This might be the most specific tip I've ever posted. My apartment came with vertical blinds. I love them! Unlike the horizontal one, they don't collect tons of dust. Then they started falling out. How does the little tab break? I have no idea. Is it my fault? It might be? (Sometimes I slide them open without turning them open first.) Since I live in an apartment I could go and ask them to fix it, but I didn't know if they would think it was me. (Let me tell you about the time a squirrel ran across my porch and got caught on my sliding glass door screen, right at the height a cat would scratch... Of course they'll think my cat damaged it even though it was the squirrel!) I tried fixing the blind slat with tape, but that didn't last even a day.

I decided to google before going to management. Turns out there's an easy and cheap-ish fix. Vane Savers! (The official name of the slats is apparently "vane".) This is the cheapest one on Amazon, so I ordered it. Under $10 to fix ten of them? I can handle that.

In other news, my focus for TV shows is so scattered. A friend introduced me to Lost Girl and I love it... but I watched three eps and never returned. I downloaded Teen Wolf to catch up with this season, but watched two eps and now I can't force myself to watch more. I love West Wing, but I've not watched it in ages. So many series on Netflix that I'm in the middle of, but I just can't concentrate on them.

Speaking of that, my google is failing me, so I can't confirm this or not. I wonder if people are more emotional after a long illness/injury recovery period? I swear, I cry endlessly now, at the silliest, littlest things. It's driving me crazy! My doctor said prolonged infections have a lot of effects on your body (for example, your red blood cells explode (I'm badly anemic now) -- "explode" is my doctor's word) Maybe it has an effect on your emotions, too...

On the To Do list for this week: Tomorrow night I'm going to the second information class for my surgery. Two and a half hours (ugh), same exact class I took the first time (sigh). We're required to attend it twice, even though it's the same class. There's not even a break! Two and a half hours sitting and listening to someone talk.

Also must do taxes. I know we still have time yet, but it feels like I'm running late. I'm still trying to catch up with paperwork/bills from my time in the hospital/recovering. Turns out I missed a credit card payment! EEEK! My first one ever, in the nearly ten years I had the card. They waved the fee for me (even without me asking, which was very nice), I just hope it doesn't go on my credit report.

A good start to the morning is NOT stepping out my door and finding a bunch of loose feathers and blood. The darned neighbor's cat is killing a bird a day, and spends the rest of the day hunting them.

If the cat were a stray or feral cat, I'd feel very slightly less bad about this, but the cat has a collar and an owner, someone is feeding it, it does not need to hunt to eat. (Though I know cats are predators and would rather hunt...)

I can't decide if I should take the bird feeder down or not. I feel like all I'm doing at this point is making it easier for the cat to kill them. If I weren't attracting them all to one small area, maybe it wouldn't be so easy for the cat. (And maybe if it were a more natural feeding setting, they might be more watchful?)

If I'm going to take the feeder down, now's a good season to do it. There should be lots of food around for them to eat. To be totally honest, I wouldn't mind saving the money I spend on seed ($25/week). I have to fill it daily, and clean the birdbath, but neither of those are much work at all. My porch area would be a lot cleaner if I stopped, too. On the other hand, I do enjoy watching them, but I don't watch them nearly as much as I used to. On the other-other hand, I'd have more privacy if I stopped (I leave my curtains all the way open so I can watch them, and my window faces the sidewalk/mailbox area, so anyone can look in).

So, what do you all think?

[Poll #1917845]

I wish I didn't feel like I had a hand in the death of the birds...

Car, again

I really want to get this whole buying a new car thing over with. It's been dragging on and on, and it's literally keeping me up at nights. I want to make an offer today, but I'm running into the same problem has been stopping me all along.

Kelly Blue Book (and other pricing sites for new cars) says this for the car I want:

MSRP $24,960
Fair Purchase Price $23,490
Dealer Invoice $23,508

The dealer is quoting me: $22,788

The price is lower than the dealer invoice. Which seems odd, since then they're not making money?

So my question is, since his quote is lower than the invoice price and the suggested fair offer price:
[Poll #1906584]

I could pay his offered price on the condition that they throw in floormats for free. ($100 and change value.)

One of the things I love about RPing is when I learn new things through it. I get to research things I usually would have no reason to! Thistle is a farmer now, and ICly the farm he works on just finished harvesting carrots, so I needed a new crop for them to plant. "Winter corn" seemed the logical thing, so I went with that.

Then I visited google to learn all I could about it...

Apparently there's no such thing as "winter corn". I swear I've heard the term used all my life, but google tells me corn doesn't grow in the winter in this part of the world (it can't handle frost at all). So where did I pick up the term "winter corn"?

Pre-googling I had thought that winter corn was a type of corn more used for animal feed than for people, if that helps.

Has anyone else heard of it? I wonder if I picked it up in some fiction book and it stuck in my head as real...

(This isn't an issue for the RP; since it's a fictional land, corn growing in winter can exist just fine. It's just odd because I thought "winter corn" was as much of a real thing as dogs and schools and such. It's strange as heck to find out there's really no such thing. HOW DID IT GET INTO MY BRAIN?!)

I have two pounds of bacon in my fridge. Both of them expired almost a month ago.

I love bacon, but the problem is I can eat it all in one sitting, so I try to resist it. Sometimes I give in and buy some (especially when it's on sale), and toss it in my fridge. I did really well resisting it this time! ...too well.

To be honest, I never realized bacon had an expiration date. Silly, I know, since it's meat, but I figured all the chemicals and preservatives probably kept it good forever. (I've likely eaten expired bacon before without realizing it.)

But now I know. My two wonderful pounds of bacon (my favorite brand of it, too!) are expired. Google didn't give me a good answer on if I should risk it or not. So I come to you, wonderful LJ friends!

The bacon has been in the fridge all this time. Both packages are unopened. They expired on 11/27, so it's currently three weeks over the date, but I likely wouldn't cook them until this weekend (though could make them tonight if pressed). I know expiration dates aren't set in stone, but this is meat... So, what would you do?

(Edit: Look at my new icon! EEE! Cutest thing ever! :D Only $3.50! Get yours here!)

I love Chinese food (Americanized Chinese food), but I currently have no restaurant I like to go to. The only way to find a new good place is to keep trying them, so today I went to someplace I had never been before.

Unfortunately, due to the area I live in, most of the Chinese food places are authentic Chinese instead of Americanized. Two totally different types of food.

Double-unfortunately, the place I went to today was the authentic kind.

I tried it anyway, since maybe I might still like it. I ordered sweet and sour pork and wonton soup. The pork was... not good. Picture chunks of pork, 50/50 meat/fat, half-battered and then deep fried. It just wasn't good. Then I opened the wonton container.

The flash glared on that front wonton, they're dark pink like the back ones. The broth is very pink, too. Why? D: The broth tastes okay, but the wontons taste a little odd (different spices than I'd expect) and I HATE the consistency of the filling (like there are rougher bits in the meat).

I may just pull my hair out in the next nine months. Evening news. 30 minutes total:

Five minutes (FIVE WHOLE MINUTES) were spent on Kate Middleton being pregnant.
Less than one minute was spent on Curiosity finding materials that could point to life on Mars.

WHY WHY WHY WHY do Americans care so much about the British royal family? HELLO, remember we fought a WAR to get away from that kind of thing? Arg.

Since I'm doing a good job on reducing the size of my To Read pile, I was poking around on Amazon for some new books. The site recommended Wool, by Hugh Howey for me.

On the surface, this looked like a good match. Post-apocalyptic, a whole lot (2,000+) five star reviews.

But then I noticed it. The book is self published. With one single exception, I have not read a self-published book that was worth paying any amount of money for. The one exception was someone on my friends list (hi [livejournal.com profile] loupnoir), and I do have another in my To Read pile written by another person on my friends list (though I can't recall which LJ name goes with pen name -- hi AJ Rose!). But non-LJ friends self published stuff? Nothing but god-awful unreadable piles of crap.

And I mentioned all the good reviews of Wool? Contain lines like "One small note to other authors that might be reading this review, part of what makes Wool a joy to read is the lack of grammatical and spelling errors of so many of the self published books.". The fact that a self published book is doing the bare minimum that should be required of a book...

Sigh. It's only $5 and change, but I really don't want to get burned again. I'm sure there are good writers out there who are self publishing, but when so many of them are just so awful they should have their keyboards taken away...

Has anyone happened to have read Wool?

Edit: I wish Amazon would mark books as self published. Once I find a book I'm interested in, if I don't recognize the publisher's name, I always google to see if it's traditional or not.

(Question's been answered, but I'll leave this post up just in case someone else needs the info. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] halogin!)

Okay, all you Tumblr folks out there, I have a question. The site is pretty darned straight-forward, but I keep running into an issue. How do you tell who has made some types of posts?

See the screenshot here.

There's no name of who posted. Neither the subject line nor the body are clickable. The note number thing leads to the URL at the bottom of the shot (my dashboard). The only way I can ever find out is to start to reblog it, then to back out of that. Which is stupid.

I'm using the default style, I changed nothing other than enabling the ask box (though this was happening before that). Is this just some odd Tumblr thing or am I doing something wrong?

Edit: And oh hey. Yay! Same-Sex Marriage Unanimously Included In DNC Platform Draft!
