Since turning off my cable TV, I've reduced my television watching by... not much at all. Oddly, the only real difference is what I watch instead of how much -- and the quality of what I've watched has gone UP. How strange is that?

Before turning my service off, I had had no idea just how many TV shows were available online (from other countries, offered through websites -- no need to download anything, just watch through the site!). It's actually better watching things this way than cable TV, since I can watch what I want when I want. (Other than live TV. While there are ways to watch that online, they're spotty and for some reason always run on EST. Watching the evening news at 2 PM and primetime shows at 5 PM is just not all that workable for me.)

I watched a few seasons of Robot Chicken straight through (I had abandoned that show early on, driven away by its more immature and crude/violent moments, but the later seasons have fewer of those and more bits that are a match for my humor). Then I realized I had to catch up with the end of Master Chef Junior. Once done with that, I looked at what other Master Chef shows were available...

Master Chef South Africa Celebrity. Hm! In all my time watching TV, I never even wondered what a cooking show in South Africa would be like. Let alone a Celebrity version of one. So I settled in to watch it. While I didn't recognize even once single celebrity, it was still a very nice series! I enjoyed what I watched of the season! (Unfortunately a few episodes were missing.) There was so much interesting stuff -- getting to know these local-to-SA celebrities and, even better, seeing the kinds of charities that exist there. If the series had been based in the US, I would have been bored by the visits to the charities to see the people there and the work they do, but seeing that information from South Africa? So interesting!

Currently I'm marathoning Deadliest Catch. I don't know why I stopped watching the series, but it's great to get back to it.

So thank you, people of India. Who knew that most uploaded TV was done through your country? You keep poor, broke me entertained though my quiet times at home.

(I had wanted to include links to the shows and sites, but my bookmarks are at home and I'm at work. If anyone would like to see where I do much of my viewing, or have a link to any show mentioned here, just leave a comment!)

I spent the last hour watching Blurred Lines cover and parody videos, trying to find a good one for this post. It all started with my canceling my TV cable service... *flashback wavy lines* When I want to watch stuff, I have to do it online. I'm surprised at how many sites like this one host hundreds of shows. More shows than I knew existed!

Apparently there's a version of the Great British Bake-off for kids (Junior Bake Off), so I started watching some season of that. The show used Blurred Lines in the middle of the ep. You know, the rape-y song? Made me blink quite a bit! Apparently it was banned in UK schools, but it's used on a TV show featuring kids?

The song sure is catchy though, thus listening to covers and parodies was really no hardship.

A scene from my current obsession amused me today. All my cats sitting around inside on the new expensive piece of cat furniture I bought, and one silly dopey cat hanging out outside under a hat.

While I still watch this show, I don't rabidly follow it. Even though this week's episode made me highly (HIGHLY) grumpy, I wouldn't be posting about it if the The Talking Dead people weren't all so happy about it.

I cannot say more than that without spoilers... )

Unrelated: Watching TV through online feeds has a few small benefits. Most feeds seem to come from the east coast, so I get to watch everything three hours early. It's also fun that when I watch news, it's usually out of New York City. My childhood home area often gets mentioned! Odd and fun!

Earlier today I was watching a Food Network feed, and it was coming out of the UK. Amusingly, they had little 30 second promos for explaining "American food", like what corndogs are. Ha!

I know it sounds odd, but I guess since I see them so infrequently now, I don't mind commercials at all, especially when they come from other areas. It's fun trying to guess where a feed is coming from based on the commercials.

This might be the most specific tip I've ever posted. My apartment came with vertical blinds. I love them! Unlike the horizontal one, they don't collect tons of dust. Then they started falling out. How does the little tab break? I have no idea. Is it my fault? It might be? (Sometimes I slide them open without turning them open first.) Since I live in an apartment I could go and ask them to fix it, but I didn't know if they would think it was me. (Let me tell you about the time a squirrel ran across my porch and got caught on my sliding glass door screen, right at the height a cat would scratch... Of course they'll think my cat damaged it even though it was the squirrel!) I tried fixing the blind slat with tape, but that didn't last even a day.

I decided to google before going to management. Turns out there's an easy and cheap-ish fix. Vane Savers! (The official name of the slats is apparently "vane".) This is the cheapest one on Amazon, so I ordered it. Under $10 to fix ten of them? I can handle that.

In other news, my focus for TV shows is so scattered. A friend introduced me to Lost Girl and I love it... but I watched three eps and never returned. I downloaded Teen Wolf to catch up with this season, but watched two eps and now I can't force myself to watch more. I love West Wing, but I've not watched it in ages. So many series on Netflix that I'm in the middle of, but I just can't concentrate on them.

Speaking of that, my google is failing me, so I can't confirm this or not. I wonder if people are more emotional after a long illness/injury recovery period? I swear, I cry endlessly now, at the silliest, littlest things. It's driving me crazy! My doctor said prolonged infections have a lot of effects on your body (for example, your red blood cells explode (I'm badly anemic now) -- "explode" is my doctor's word) Maybe it has an effect on your emotions, too...

On the To Do list for this week: Tomorrow night I'm going to the second information class for my surgery. Two and a half hours (ugh), same exact class I took the first time (sigh). We're required to attend it twice, even though it's the same class. There's not even a break! Two and a half hours sitting and listening to someone talk.

Also must do taxes. I know we still have time yet, but it feels like I'm running late. I'm still trying to catch up with paperwork/bills from my time in the hospital/recovering. Turns out I missed a credit card payment! EEEK! My first one ever, in the nearly ten years I had the card. They waved the fee for me (even without me asking, which was very nice), I just hope it doesn't go on my credit report.
