Okay, maybe not miles. In an effort at things, I'm trying to work up to that whole "walk 10,000 steps a day" thing. (I know for some of you out there, that's a joke. But for me, who is on a computer all day at work, then on a computer all day after work, it's not ever anything I've even gotten close to.) Apparently you can break that 10,000 steps down into as small of units as you want, so I'm breaking them down into 100 steps at a time. (The goal of this isn't to get your heart rate up, just to not be sedentary.)

Small steps. Not literal small steps. Small steps towards reaching 10,000 steps. Apparently walking in place counts just as much as walking to go somewhere, so I stand next to my computer and do 100 frequently. That's worked so far at home, but tomorrow I go back to the office, so I'm not sure how well that will go there...

And speaking of work, changes are a'brewing...

Why would a company want to cut its workforce down by so much? )

In gaming news, the MMO I play (FFXIV) has an expansion coming out in June. Today was a four hour long preview of all the changes, all shown by the producer (man who saved the whole game). It was so fun and exciting to watch it all, especially since my whole guild watched it online together. It's such a cool, amazing experience to get excited over stuff with people from around the world. We have one person from Africa, one from South America, a bunch from across Europe, and lots from North America. All of us together, excited over this online thing. :)

Snow Flower: Arara's Tale by Madison Keller
Rating: Liked (Hated-Disliked-Okay-Liked-Loved)

Look at the book's cover. Look at my rating for this book. Doesn't seem to match, does it?

I got this book expecting it to be awful. I mean, look at the cover! Yeah, yeah, "You can't tell a book by its cover", except usually you can.

While Snow Flower was far from perfect, it was a surprisingly enjoyable read.

It takes place on a fantasy world? alien planet? Somewhere where dogs(?) are the dominant species. There's some other race of things as well (something that's "cold to the touch"), but I have no idea what they're supposed to be.

One of the big downsides of this book was that we were missing all backstory and description -- it's a prequel set in the world of the first book, so I suppose all the information is in that.

The dogs(?) are evolved(?), they can stand and walk on two legs if they want, but are also comfortable on four. They wear minimal clothing (shorts and a harness), and can talk plus have some sort of mental communication system (only within their pack?).

The packs (basically like a town, I think) have alphas/betas/omegas, and the story was about the girl puppy of an omega couple. She was bullied badly, but because of the pack social structure it was an okay thing to do.

For all I didn't know about the story, I quite liked it. That surprises the hell out of me, because... look at that cover. This novella is currently free on Amazon (click the link at the top of this post if you like -- I get nothing if you do). I enjoyed it enough that I paid for the next book, and will be reading it next.

The new Walking Dead spin-off has a name: Fear the Walking Dead. *cough* Quite, um, original.. I guess they wanted to be sure that people knew the new show was related to the first one. It stars someone named Cliff Curtis, and is set in LA in the early days of the zombie outbreak.

I'll be checking it out, once it airs.

In health news, I'm still quite red all over and feel not so great. Luckily I haven't been light-headed or fainting, but I still feel pretty blah. I took my last pill of the antibiotic I was allergic to on Wednesday night, so you'd think this would be out of my system by now (Google tells me it can take a few days though). I have an appointment with my new doctor on Monday for a follow-up.

Remember yesterday I saw the podiatrist and she put me on an antibiotic that we thought I wasn't allergic to? Turns out we were wrong.

I turned bright red from scalp to ankles, and itchy has hell, then I started fainting. Nothing like the surprise of suddenly finding yourself on the floor with no idea how you got there...

Turns out when you're bright red for too long, too much of your blood is on the surface of your body and so you get low blood pressure. Too low blood pressure = fainting.

Luckily I was only in the hospital a half-day, but I get so skittish about going that I packed a ton of stuff. Better safe than sorry!

Enough medical stuff, body.

- I got FFXIV installed. I had to use my work email address, which I really, really did not want to do, but the game is so pretty I can nearly forgive that. After playing WoW for so long, a pretty game makes me want to cry. I spent almost a half-hour customizing my character just right. Which is something of a joke -- which "Thistle" do I mean at this point? Anyway, I made him look as much like FFXI Thistle as I could, but there's a lot of WoW Thistle in his background/personality (mostly moot, since I'm unlikely to ever RP there).

- I got my review at work. Being new to the tech writing group, I was expected to get 'gaining competency', which is what all people new to a job/position get since they're ramping up to speed. Instead I got all meets or exceeds competency. o.O Woot! Thanks RP for all the writing/editing skills I picked up through the years. Kids, if parents tell you computer games are a waste of time, point this out! But seriously, it was because of my engineering background as well -- I'm a lot more technical than the other writers, so I'm handy in that way.

- The hospital sent me a bill for almost a thousand dollars ($992). While that's a lot better than $144,000, I'm still unhappy. I sent them a reply asking what/why my insurance wasn't covering.

- Toe is healing? It's still red, but my instructions say to gently scrub off the scab three times a day, so... that'd make anything red, I'd think. The swelling is gone and it only hurts a little now and then (see also: removing the scab three times a day). I still have two days left of the antibiotics though, so we'll see what happens after that.

- Way too many medical appointments next week. x.x Tuesday is the nutritionist, Wednesday the doctor for my leg/toe, Friday my car to the shop, then Monday is the dentist. My cat needs to go to the vet soon after (delaying that as much as I can), and two other new appointments for myself, along with that darned sleep study.

- Still need to do my taxes. Every year I have to pay hundreds of dollars, so I always drag my feet. Blah. I still want to get it done with though.

- I bought a panini maker. I debated for a week, since once I have my surgery I won't be eating sandwiches anymore (I think?), but it was only $30 so if I enjoy it for four months or so it should be worth it. Eventually I'll find a new home for it and the Soda Stream twins.

  • I really, really liked this video. I'd suggest you watch it at the highest resolution for most spiffiness.

I can sort of handle the slow moving zombies, but the faster ones? Eeek, no.

And speaking of zombies, I still haven't watched the first ep of this season's The Walking Dead yet. D: I think tomorrow will be Homeland's new ep, then tomorrow Walking Dead.
  • I haven't been backing up my IC writings to LJ lately, mostly because I haven't really been writing much. (And now, with all the new IC posts on
my friends list I'm all EEEK because it's all so good.) But anyway, I
wanted to save a copy of this one.

For those who don't know,
Dandelion is a worgen (werewolf), but he's special Special-special. He's one part Down syndrome kid (so he loves everyone, loves giving hugs), one part puppy (friendly, happy, outgoing) and one part 60s hippie (dreamy, "stoned out of his mind" 24/7). The reasons for that aren't important to this writing.

[info]wheatonwra* started a thread on our Alliance guild board: Character Prompt: Your Death ("How is your character going to die (or how would you like for it to happen)?")

Response for Dande back here... )

Speaking
of Dande, I've used the same icon for him on the guild board for nearly
a year now, but it still amuses me every time I see it:

Hm, it's under 100x100, I really could save it as a LJ icon, too.
  • I have no idea how the formatting of this post is going to look. I switched to Rich Text for ease of making bullet point list (I thought maybe that would make my hodgepodge of subject matters in one post easier to follow), but it makes my post look very odd. WYSIWYG editing = NO THANKS. Next time I'll just look up the code for a bullet list and do it myself. Grr, I know this is going to look odd. My line lengths look all wrong on the above point.  Mumble mutter.
  • Doctor appointment was today, and it was almost all good news. She said I've made the more progress this time than any other time I saw her (many years). I lost... not as much weight as I'd like to, but an amount that probably counts as reasonable/rational. My blood sugar is in control. My other numbers are either better in line now or are headed that way.  Which, on one hand, is great news. On the other, it means that exercising seven days a week and eating boneless skinless chicken breasts for dinner all the time is working and I'll have to stick to that. :P
  • I'm starting to think that atheists need to become a protected group. Oh what the hell, how in the world do you make links with text in fricking rich text format. My kingdom for HTML use!  (When I switch back to HTML, the post becomes an unfixable mess.) Well, google or copy and paste or something. http://www.examiner.com/humanist-in-national/american-cancer-society-refuses-500-000-from-atheists American Cancer Society refuses to let atheists work to donate money.  Repeated cries that "only Christians should hold public office". And of course the whole "you can't be a moral person if you're not religious!" thing.
Usually I wait until the end of the night to post, so I can add things as needed, but I'm going to send this through now so I can be less grumpy about it. Hopefully it'll come out looking right!

Edit: I see an error in my schedule on watching things (two 'tomorrow's), but rich text doesn't permit me to edit that, the video is in the way. Mumble. And line break issues. D: MY POST SUCKS AND I CAN'T FIX IT.
